Munich's local transport is organised in one fare system, the Münchner Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund (MVV): one ticket covers S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams, buses and regional trains within its zones. Inside the city, U-Bahn, trams and buses are run by the city's transport company MVG, which operated 8 U-Bahn lines, 11 tram lines and 79 bus lines at the end of 2025 and carried 621 million passengers that year. S-Bahn trains connect the city with the region and the airport.
For daily travel, most residents use the Deutschlandticket. For occasional trips, single, stripe and day tickets work well. This guide explains the zones, the tickets and their 2026 prices, and the rules that most often cost newcomers a penalty fare.
The zones (Zone M and zones 1 to 12)
- Zone M covers the entire City of Munich and some neighbouring areas. Most trips within the city need a zone M ticket.
- Zones 1 to 12 cover the surrounding districts. Munich Airport is in zone 5.
- Some stations lie on a border and belong to two zones; you may choose the cheaper one for your direction.
- To find the right ticket, count the zones you travel through; the network map shows the zone for each stop.
Tickets are only valid for the zones printed on them, and for a limited time: 2 hours for zone M, 3 hours for zone M-1 and 5 hours for zone M-5 on single and stripe tickets.
Main tickets and 2026 prices
Prices valid from 1 January 2026 (adults unless stated):
- Short trip (Kurzstrecke): €2.10. Up to four stops after boarding, of which at most two by S-Bahn, U-Bahn, express bus or regional train, within one hour.
- Single ticket (Einzelfahrkarte) zone M: €4.20; zone M-1: €6.40; zone M-5 (for example city centre to the airport): €15.10. One direction, transfers allowed, no return.
- Stripe ticket (Streifenkarte): €18.70 for 10 stripes; U21 version for ages 15 to 20: €10.20. Zone M costs 2 stripes; a short trip 1 stripe.
- Single day ticket zone M: €10.10; group day ticket (2 to 5 people) zone M: €19.70. Valid until 6 a.m. the next day. Since January 2026, children aged 6 to 14 travel free with the single day ticket (your own children without limit, other children up to three).
- Airport-City-Day-Ticket (zones M-5): the same price as a zone M-5 day ticket, €17.50 single and €32.60 for a group in 2026.
- Children aged 6 to 14: single trip €2.00, day ticket €3.80.
- Weekly ticket from €23.80; monthly ticket from €71.40 (zone M or two zones); monthly ticket valid from 9 a.m. on weekdays from €63.50.
- Monatskarte S: from €31.10 a month, only with a München-Pass or similar social pass.
- Bike day ticket: from €3.70.
From 1 January 2027 MVV fares rise by 4.9% on average. The short trip, the zone M single ticket and the children's day ticket stay the same; the stripe ticket rises to €21.00 on paper (€19.50 digital) and the zone M monthly ticket to €74.80.
Deutschlandticket and the reduced Bavarian ticket
The Deutschlandticket is a monthly subscription valid on local and regional transport throughout Germany, including all MVV buses, trams, U-Bahn and S-Bahn. It costs €63 a month in 2026 and €66.80 from 1 January 2027, decided by the federal and state coordinating council on 30 September 2026. In Munich it is cheaper than a regular zone M monthly ticket.
- You can order it through the MVG customer portal or the MVGO app as a mobile ticket or chip card, or through other transport companies. Subscriptions can be started at MVG customer centres up to the 10th of a month.
- It can be cancelled monthly; the cancellation must arrive by the 10th of the month to take effect for the following month.
- Students, trainees and volunteers in voluntary service in Bavaria can get the Bavarian reduced Deutschlandticket for €43 a month in 2026 with proof from their school, university or service provider.
- Ask your employer about a subsidised job ticket version.

Buying, apps and stamping
- Apps. The MVGO app and the MVV app sell mobile tickets. A mobile ticket is only valid together with an official photo ID.
- MVVswipe in the MVV app works by checking in and out: you pay per trip and never more than the day ticket for the zones you used that day. You must be 18 or older to check in.
- Machines at stations and in trams and buses sell paper tickets.
- Stamping. Paper stripe tickets and other tickets with the note Hier entwerten must be stamped before you travel at the blue validators. Tickets bought in buses, trams, at DB machines or online are already valid.
- Customer centres: MVG has customer centres in the U-Bahn mezzanines at Marienplatz and Hauptbahnhof, open Monday to Friday 8:00 to 20:00 and Saturday 9:00 to 16:00 (2026). They help with subscriptions, tickets and the Deutschlandticket.
Ticket inspections and the penalty fare
There are no barriers, but inspections are frequent. Travelling without a valid ticket costs an increased fare of €60. If you hold a personal ticket, such as a subscription, but forgot it, the charge is reduced to €7 if you show it within 14 days. Intent does not matter: an unstamped stripe ticket or a ticket for the wrong zones counts as no ticket.
Getting to and from the airport
Munich Airport is in zone 5. The S-Bahn lines S1 (via the western districts) and S8 (via the eastern districts) connect it with Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz; the trip to the centre takes about 35 minutes. From the city you need a zone M-5 ticket: a single costs €15.10 and the Airport-City-Day-Ticket €17.50 in 2026. The Deutschlandticket is valid on these trains too.
Bikes and bike sharing
- MyRadl, the regional bike-sharing scheme for Munich and 36 surrounding municipalities, started on 7 May 2026 with almost 1,000 stations. In 2026 a classic bike costs €1 per 30 minutes and an e-bike €3 per 30 minutes; for MVG subscribers the first 30 minutes on a classic bike are free. You can rent through the MVV app, the MVGO app or the operator's app.
- A bike day ticket for taking your own bike on trains costs from €3.70 (2026).
Construction work in 2026 and 2027
The MVG is renovating the U-Bahn stations Poccistraße and Goetheplatz. U3 and U6 services between Sendlinger Tor and Implerstraße are interrupted or reduced in phases: from 5 October to 27 November 2026 with a shuttle train and replacement buses, normal service over the winter from 28 November 2026 to 11 April 2027, and a full closure again from 12 April to 1 August 2027. Other sections of U4, U5 and U8 also have temporary restrictions in autumn 2026. Check the MVG app before you travel and allow extra time.
Watch out
Stamp paper stripe tickets before you board. An unstamped ticket counts as no ticket and costs €60.
Carry an official photo ID when you travel with a mobile ticket (HandyTicket); without it the ticket is not valid.
A zone M ticket is not valid to the airport; you need zone M-5 or a Deutschlandticket.
Common mistakes
Buying a monthly zone M ticket for €71.40 when the Deutschlandticket costs €63 and covers more. Forgetting that a single ticket does not include the return journey. Using a short trip for more than four stops or more than two rail stops.
Tips
For a day with several trips, compare the day ticket (€10.10 in zone M) with single tickets, or use MVVswipe, which caps the price automatically. Students and trainees in Bavaria should check the €43 reduced Deutschlandticket or a semester ticket at their university. If you receive social benefits or have a low income, ask about the München-Pass and the Monatskarte S.
