Köpenick
The largest locality of Treptow-Köpenick, built around a medieval old town on an island where the Dahme meets the Spree, with a Baroque palace, the famous town hall, the old fishing quarter, villa streets in Wendenschloss, renovated estates and forests on several sides.

Overview
Köpenick lies in the south-east of Berlin and is the largest locality (Ortsteil) of the Treptow-Köpenick district, covering about 35 km². It was first mentioned in a document on 10 February 1209. On 30 June 2026, 73,921 people were registered here (Amt für Statistik Berlin-Brandenburg), more than in any other locality of the district.
The district office lists several historically distinct parts: the medieval Altstadt (old town), the Kietz (a fishing settlement first recorded in the 14th century), the Dammvorstadt and Köllnische Vorstadt, the former industrial area Spindlersfeld (from 1873), the villa colony Wendenschloss (founded 1892) and the Allende estates.
Köpenick is well known for the Köpenickiade of 1906 at the town hall, the story of the "Captain of Köpenick", which local theatre groups still perform as street theatre.
Character
- Old town: set between the Dahme and the Spree, with renovated 18th- and 19th-century houses, cafés and restaurants, and a small-town atmosphere. The whole old town is a protected ensemble. Köpenick Palace (Baroque, 1677-1685) on the palace island south of the old town houses art collections; the town hall dates from 1901-1904.
- Kietz: east of the old town along the Dahme, with single-storey fishermen's houses and Wilhelminian buildings.
- Dammvorstadt: north of the old town, a popular shopping area with new housing.
- Wendenschloss: a turn-of-the-century villa area between the Dahme and the forest.
- Allende-Viertel: prefabricated estates from the 1970s and 1980s, since upgraded and renovated.
- Spindlersfeld: grew out of industrial sites; historic workers' housing is a listed estate, and more than 800 new homes are being built on former factory land.
The locality is framed by the Wuhlheide and Dammheide forests, and the Großer Müggelsee, Berlin's largest lake, and the Köpenick forest are close by.

Evenings and nightlife
Quiet evenings
Köpenick is quiet in the evening. Restaurants, cafés and bars in the old town and along the water are the main focal point; for clubs, most people head to the inner-city districts.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- There is no U-Bahn. Journeys to the centre run via the S3 or by tram to Schöneweide, so check the commute from the specific address, especially in Wendenschloss or the Allende-Viertel.
- The old town, the palace and the town hall are tourist attractions, so the old town can be busy with visitors.
- The locality has an older age structure than Berlin as a whole, with about a quarter of residents aged 65 or over.
