Alt-Treptow

A small inner-city locality on the Spree between Kreuzberg, Neukölln and Friedrichshain, with old apartment buildings, offices on the river, the 84-hectare Treptower Park with the Soviet Memorial, and quick S-Bahn links via Treptower Park station.

Overview

Alt-Treptow is the north-western tip of the Treptow-Köpenick district and its most central locality (Ortsteil). It is bounded by the Spree to the north and otherwise by the Landwehr Canal, Harzer Straße and Heidelberger Straße, railway lines and the outer edges of Treptower Park. The Molecule Man, a 30-metre metal sculpture by Jonathan Borofsky, stands in the Spree at the meeting point of three districts.

On 30 June 2026, 13,451 people were registered here (Amt für Statistik Berlin-Brandenburg), making it one of the smaller localities. Its age structure is younger than the Berlin average: about 36% of residents were aged 27 to 44 (Berlin: about 30%), and only about 11% were 65 or older (Berlin: about 19%). About 22% held a non-German citizenship (Berlin: about 25%).

Character

berlin.de describes Alt-Treptow as a long-standing insider tip with beautiful old buildings and lots of greenery.

  • Residential streets: mostly imperial-era tenement buildings (Mietshäuser), with some 1920s buildings and newer modernised townhouses.
  • On the Spree: the area changed from industry to services; the Treptowers office complex is a landmark. The Arena Berlin event venue and the Badeschiff, a floating swimming pool in the Spree, are on the riverbank.
  • Treptower Park: laid out in the 19th century to plans by Berlin's garden director Gustav Meyer, with river promenades, open meadows, a rose garden, the Archenhold Observatory built for the 1896 industrial exhibition, the Insel der Jugend island, boat rentals and excursion steamers from the Treptow harbour. The Soviet Memorial in the park is the largest memorial in Germany to fallen soldiers of the Red Army.

  • S-Bahn: Treptower Park station is on the Ringbahn (S41/S42) and on the line towards Schöneweide, served by the S8, S85 and S9. The S9 runs to BER airport in one direction and through the city centre to Spandau in the other.
  • Bus: several bus lines, including 165, 166 and 265, stop near the park.
  • Car: since late August 2025, the A100 city motorway ends at the Am Treptower Park junction, giving direct access to the motorway network.

Kreuzberg, Neukölln and Friedrichshain are within walking or cycling distance.

Housing

Almost all housing is in older apartment buildings, many of them renovated, with a smaller share of 1920s buildings and newer townhouses; the river frontage is dominated by offices and event venues.

In the IBB Housing Market Report 2025, the Alt-Treptow planning area had a median asking rent of €18.13 per m² net cold, based on 78 listings, compared with €15.78 for Berlin as a whole. Few flats are advertised here, so individual offers vary a lot. Check any offer against the official rent index query (Mietspiegel 2026).

For families

On 30 June 2026 about 700 children under six lived in Alt-Treptow, and 14.3% of residents were under 15 (Berlin: 13.3%). Treptower Park and the neighbouring Plänterwald forest are the main outdoor spaces, with the river promenade, open meadows and boat trips.

Evenings and nightlife

Mixed evenings

The residential streets are fairly quiet, but the riverbank brings evening crowds, with concerts and events at the Arena, the Badeschiff and beer gardens in Treptower Park. The nightlife of Kreuzberg, Neukölln and Friedrichshain is a short walk, bike ride or S-Bahn stop away.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Since the A100 extension to Am Treptower Park opened in August 2025, traffic around the junction has grown. According to Senate figures reported in 2026, about 32,000 vehicles crossed the nearby Elsenbrücke in 12 hours in April 2026, compared with about 22,400 a year earlier, and the neighbouring district reported more complaints about through traffic.
  • Treptower Park, the Arena and the riverbank draw large crowds for events and on summer weekends, which can mean noise and busy streets nearby.
  • The locality is small and few flats come onto the market; set up search alerts and consider neighbouring Plänterwald, Neukölln or Kreuzberg too.
  • There is no U-Bahn station in Alt-Treptow itself; most rail journeys start at S-Bahn Treptower Park.
