Overview

Winterhude is a neighbourhood (Stadtteil) in the district of Hamburg-Nord, north of the Außenalster. With 61,200 registered residents on 31 December 2025 on 7.6 km², it is one of Hamburg's most populous neighbourhoods, according to the Statistikamt Nord's neighbourhood profiles.

The city portal describes Winterhude as "green, quiet and close to the Alster", a varied neighbourhood combining grand villas, brick housing, an office district and one of the city's largest parks.

Character

  • Winterhude-Süd: villas and large apartments near the Außenalster, centred on the Mühlenkamp and Gertigstraße, with boutiques, cafés and bars. The city portal calls this "the heart of Winterhude".
  • Winterhude-Nord: around the Winterhuder Marktplatz, more urban and less upmarket, with shops and a popular weekly market.
  • Jarrestadt: a 1920s brick housing estate for workers, designed under Fritz Schumacher and now a listed monument, with courtyards and green spaces; many young families live here.
  • City Nord: a 1970s office district, many of whose buildings are listed.
  • Culture: the Komödie Winterhuder Fährhaus theatre, the Kampnagel performing arts venue in a former machine factory, the Goldbekhaus community arts centre and the Planetarium in the Stadtpark.

Getting around

  • U1
  • U3
  • U-Bahn: the U3 runs through Winterhude with several stations, among them Borgweg, Sierichstraße and Saarlandstraße; the U1 also crosses the neighbourhood.
  • Buses: MetroBus lines connect Winterhude with the centre.
  • On foot and by water: the Alster shore path is popular for walking and running, and about eight kilometres of canals invite paddling.

Housing

  • Villas and large period flats near the Alster, at the top of the price range.
  • 1920s brick estates such as the Jarrestadt.
  • Older and post-war apartment buildings further from the water, where the city portal notes that cheaper flats can still be found "with a bit of luck".

The city portal states that rents are well above the Hamburg average, especially close to the Alster. In 2025 the average flat measured 70.4 m², and 64.1% of households were single-person households (Hamburg: 55.4%). Social housing made up 5.2% of flats in January 2026 (Hamburg: 7.6%).

For families

At the end of 2025, 13.5% of households included children (Hamburg: 17.5%). Winterhude had 43 day-care centres (Kitas, March 2026) and 5 primary schools (2025/26), according to the neighbourhood profiles.

The Stadtpark (about 150 hectares) in Winterhude has lawns, sports facilities, a natural swimming lake and open-air concerts in summer, and the Alster shore paths are ideal for walks with children.

Evenings and nightlife

Mixed evenings

The Mühlenkamp, Gertigstraße and Schinkelplatz have many bars, espresso bars and restaurants, and Kampnagel and the Komödie Winterhuder Fährhaus offer theatre and performance. There is no club district, and residential streets are quiet at night.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Rents near the Alster are among the highest in Hamburg; look further from the water or towards Winterhude-Nord for more affordable options.
  • Parking is limited in the denser streets.
  • Summer open-air concerts in the Stadtpark bring crowds to the surrounding streets.
