Eppendorf
An affluent, green neighbourhood north of the Alster with grand imperial-era apartment buildings, the shopping street Eppendorfer Landstraße, cafés and the University Medical Center (UKE). Calm, central and popular, with some of the highest prices in Hamburg.

Overview
Eppendorf is a neighbourhood (Stadtteil) in the district of Hamburg-Nord, between the Alster, Hoheluft and Groß Borstel. On 31 December 2025, 25,067 people were registered here on 2.7 km², according to the Statistikamt Nord's neighbourhood profiles.
The city portal calls it Hamburg's oldest village and one of its most popular neighbourhoods, with a lot of greenery, water and representative architecture, and a high urban quality of life. The headline of its portrait sums it up as "nicely rich and richly nice".
Character
- Architecture: Wilhelmine-era upper-middle-class apartment buildings with bay windows, turrets and stucco, and Jugendstil and Gründerzeit façades; side streets have simpler red-brick buildings with smaller rental flats.
- Eppendorfer Landstraße: the main shopping street, with boutiques and small food shops, and the setting for a large street festival.
- UKE: the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf) is a major employer with more than 6,000 staff, known for transplant medicine.
- Cafés and culture: long-established cafés and the Alma Hoppes Lustspielhaus cabaret theatre.
Eppendorf is busy during the day but has no large nightlife strip.
Getting around
- U1
- U3
- U-Bahn: Kellinghusenstraße is the main interchange, used by more than 15,000 passengers a day according to the city portal; the U1 and U3 both run through Eppendorf.
- Buses connect the UKE and the residential streets with the centre and neighbouring districts.
- Road: the Ring 2 ring road runs through the neighbourhood, and the portal notes congestion and a shortage of parking.
Housing
- Large period apartments in Wilhelmine-era buildings; many rental flats were converted into owner-occupied flats early on, which attracted well-off buyers.
- Smaller rental flats in red-brick buildings on side streets.
In 2025 the average flat measured 79 m² (Hamburg: 76 m²), and residents had 45.4 m² of living space per person (Hamburg: 38.8 m²). Social housing made up only 3.6% of flats in January 2026 (Hamburg: 7.6%). Listed prices for owner-occupied flats were about €8,000 per m² (Hamburg average €6,278).
For families
At the end of 2025, 13.2% of households included children (Hamburg: 17.5%). Eppendorf had 13 day-care centres (Kitas, March 2026) and 3 primary schools (2025/26), according to the neighbourhood profiles.
Families use the Eppendorfer Park, with a playground and sledging slopes, Hayns Park on the Alster and the paddling routes on the Alster. The Eppendorfer Moor, a large inner-city moor, lies just across the border in Groß Borstel.
Evenings and nightlife
Quiet evenings
Eppendorf has many cafés, restaurants and a few bars and a cabaret theatre, but no nightlife strip; evenings are calm. For clubs and late bars, residents go to the Schanze, St. Pauli or Winterhude.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- One of the most expensive neighbourhoods in Hamburg, with few vacancies.
- Traffic on the Ring 2 and parking pressure are common complaints.
- Very convenient if you work at the UKE.
