Gesundbrunnen
A dense, diverse locality in northern Mitte built around one of Berlin's main rail hubs, with the Brunnenviertel and Soldiner Kiez, the Humboldthain park and the Mauerpark on its eastern edge.

Overview
Gesundbrunnen is a locality (Ortsteil) of the Mitte district. According to the district office, it borders Wedding to the west along Reinickendorfer Straße, the Reinickendorf and Pankow districts to the north and east, and its southern boundary is Bernauer Straße, where the Berlin Wall once ran. The Mauerpark marks part of its eastern edge. About 95,000 people were registered here on 30 June 2026, making it the most populous of the three former Wedding localities.
The name means "healing spring": an iron-rich spring discovered in 1748 led to the Luisenbad spa, which opened in 1760. The spring was buried by building work in 1882 and dried up for good in 1891. During industrialisation the area turned into a densely built industrial and working-class quarter, and after the division of Berlin it became an important crossing point between East and West.
Today the locality is defined by Gesundbrunnen station, a major interchange for S-Bahn, U-Bahn, regional and long-distance trains, and by the Gesundbrunnen-Center shopping mall next to it. The small Panke river runs through the area.
Character
Gesundbrunnen is one of the most international parts of Berlin: on 30 June 2026 about 40% of residents held a non-German citizenship (Berlin: about a quarter). It is also a family locality, with about 14% of residents under 15, slightly above the Berlin average.
The main Kieze are:
- Brunnenviertel in the south-east, between Bernauer Straße and the station. Much of it was rebuilt in the 1970s and 1980s in what was then described as Europe's largest urban redevelopment area, so many blocks are modern rather than nineteenth-century.
- Soldiner Kiez and the area around Badstraße in the north, with denser Gründerzeit streets.
- The streets around Volkspark Humboldthain.
Bad- and Brunnenstraße form the main north-south axis with everyday shops. The Wall memorial on Bernauer Straße and the historic Paulskirche (1835, designed by Schinkel) are local landmarks.

Gesundbrunnen is one of the best-connected localities in the north:
- Gesundbrunnen station: S-Bahn S1, S2, S25, S26 (north-south through the centre to Friedrichstraße, Potsdamer Platz and Südkreuz) and the Ringbahn S41/S42, plus the U8 and regional and long-distance trains.
- S Humboldthain (S1, S2, S25, S26) on the south side of the park.
- U8: Pankstraße, Gesundbrunnen and Voltastraße, with Bernauer Straße on the southern edge; south to Alexanderplatz, Kottbusser Tor and Neukölln.
- U8 and U9 meet at Osloer Straße in the north; the U9 continues to Leopoldplatz, Zoologischer Garten and Steglitz.
- Trams M13 and 50 along Osloer Straße towards Wedding and Prenzlauer Berg; M10 runs along Bernauer Straße to Hauptbahnhof and Prenzlauer Berg.
Housing
The locality has two quite different housing landscapes:
- 1970s and 1980s redevelopment housing in the Brunnenviertel, mostly larger blocks built after the old tenements were demolished.
- Gründerzeit tenement buildings in the northern Kieze such as the Soldiner Kiez and around Badstraße.
There is no official rent figure for Gesundbrunnen alone. As a citywide anchor, the IBB Housing Market Report 2025 found a median asking rent of €15.78 per m² net cold for flats advertised in Berlin in 2025. Use the official rent index query (Mietspiegel 2026) to check what is legally usual for a specific address.
For families
About 14% of residents are under 15 (Berlin: about 13%, 30 June 2026). Useful places for families:
- Volkspark Humboldthain: a rose garden, large lawns, football fields, several playgrounds including a supervised adventure playground, the outdoor pool Sommerbad Humboldthain in summer, sledding on the bunker hill in winter and viewing platforms on the former flak tower.
- Mauerpark on the eastern edge, with the children's farm Jugendfarm Moritzhof and a climbing rock nearby.
For childcare, search by address in the city's Kita-Navigator. Primary school places are normally allocated by registered address, as decided by the district school office.
Evenings and nightlife
Mixed evenings
Most of Gesundbrunnen is residential and quiet in the evening, with local cafés and restaurants along Bad- and Brunnenstraße. The Mauerpark on the eastern edge draws large crowds on summer weekends, and the bars of Prenzlauer Berg are a short walk away.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- The area around Gesundbrunnen station and the shopping centre is busy and loud at most hours; streets further from the station are calmer.
- Weekend crowds and events at the Mauerpark can mean noise for flats directly next to the park.
- Much of the Brunnenviertel is 1970s and 1980s housing rather than Altbau; check floor plans, heating and energy certificate as you would for any building.
- Many of your journeys will run through one interchange; when a line through Gesundbrunnen is closed for construction, alternatives can be slower, so check the S-Bahn and BVG construction notices before you rely on a commute.
- If you are offered a furnished flat for a limited period, ask whether the building lies in a social preservation area (*soziales Erhaltungsgebiet*, *Milieuschutz*): since 18 April 2026 such lets there need a district permit.
