District

Sendling

A densely built, traditional district south of the centre, between the railway and the Isar, with many rental and cooperative buildings, Jugendstil facades around Harras, the wholesale market hall and the Flaucher riverside. Good U-Bahn links, currently affected by station renovations.

Overview

Sendling (district no. 6) is one of Munich's oldest places: the village of Sentilinga was first documented in 782, and it was incorporated into Munich in 1877. Industry settled along the railway lines, and cooperatives built housing for workers.

The district lies south of the Ludwigsvorstadt and Isarvorstadt. The S-Bahn line forms its western border, the Isar with the Flaucher its eastern edge, and the Mittlerer Ring ring road runs through it. On 31 December 2025, 41,334 people lived here on about 3.9 km², 105 per hectare. About 27.5% did not hold German citizenship.

Character

The city portal calls Sendling one of Munich's most characteristic districts.

  • Untersendling: remains of the old village core near Lindwurmstraße and the old parish church St. Margaret.
  • Harras: a local centre known for Jugendstil facades from around 1900.
  • Großmarkthalle: the wholesale market, described as Europe's third-largest hub for fruit and vegetables. It trades only with businesses; the Münchner Tafel food bank is based there, and architects and IT firms have moved onto the site.
  • Flaucher: a popular stony beach on the Isar for swimming, barbecues and relaxing.

Getting around

  • U3
  • U6
  • S-Bahn (Harras)
  • U-Bahn: U3 and U6 at Implerstraße and Poccistraße (on the northern edge); U6 at Harras; U3 at Brudermühlstraße.
  • S-Bahn at Harras, with connections towards Wolfratshausen.
  • Buses add local links.

The renovation of the U3/U6 stations Poccistraße and Goetheplatz interrupts services between Implerstraße and Sendlinger Tor in phases until 1 August 2027, with replacement buses and a shuttle train.

Housing

Sendling is one of the most densely built districts, with many rental and cooperative buildings (Genossenschaften) and a high share of older buildings, many of them renovated. A low-energy building on Ganghoferstraße is cited by the city portal as a model of efficient construction.

For families

About 13% of residents were under 18 at the end of 2025 (city average 15.2%). The Flaucher on the Isar is popular with children for paddling, and the Neuhofener Berg is a green area used for sledging in winter.

Evenings and nightlife

Mixed evenings

Primarily a residential district; in summer the Flaucher is a popular meeting place, and the bars of the Glockenbachviertel lie just to the north.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Until 1 August 2027, U3 and U6 services towards the city centre are interrupted in phases because of station renovations; check the MVG app.
  • The Mittlerer Ring ring road runs through the district; check traffic noise when viewing flats near it.
  • Densely built, with green space mainly along the Isar.
