District

Pasing-Obermenzing

A district in Munich's west with its own town-like centre around Pasing station, one of the city's main rail hubs, plus villa quarters, terraced and single-family houses, the Würm river green corridor and many families. Pasing was an independent town until 1938.

Overview

Pasing was first documented in 763, before Munich itself, grew after the Munich–Augsburg railway opened in 1840, became a town in 1905 and was incorporated into Munich in 1938. Together with Obermenzing it forms district no. 21. Locals often call Pasing a "city within the city" and take pride in their local identity.

On 31 December 2025, 81,783 people lived here on about 16.5 km², 50 per hectare. About 26.5% did not hold German citizenship, and 17.2% of residents were under 18, above the city average of 15.2%.

Character

  • Pasing centre: one of the liveliest districts in Munich's west, centred on the station and Pasing's own Marienplatz with its Marian column (the square was redesigned in 2014/2015), shopping streets such as Gleichmannstraße and the Pasinger Viktualienmarkt.
  • Villa quarters north of the station around Wensauerplatz with its Bismarck fountain, many villas renovated.
  • Churches such as Mariä Geburt on the Würm, first mentioned in 1315, and Maria Schutz; there is also a mosque on Planegger Straße.
  • Halle 2, the city waste company's second-hand department store.

  • Pasing station is one of Munich's main rail hubs: S-Bahn lines S3, S4, S5, S6, S8 and S20 (S20 at peak times), regional trains and long-distance ICE and IC services. The S8 also runs to the airport.
  • Tram 19 runs from Pasing station to the city centre.
  • Buses serve Obermenzing and the outer areas; there is no U-Bahn in the district.
  • The Bürgerbüro at Landsberger Straße 486 is one of the city's six citizens' offices.

Housing

A mix of apartment blocks, terraced houses and single-family homes, with the two villa quarters north of the station as the most notable.

For families

The district has a high share of children (17.2% under 18). The 20-hectare Pasinger Stadtpark and the Würm green corridor offer space for walks and play. The municipal Westbad has family and sports pools and an open sauna area, and the neighbouring Freibad West has the largest lawns of Munich's outdoor pools.

Evenings and nightlife

Mixed evenings

Shopping streets and markets make Pasing's centre lively during the day; the surrounding residential areas are quieter.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • No U-Bahn; most commutes run via the S-Bahn from Pasing station or tram 19.
  • Excellent rail links west and to the airport make Pasing practical for regional commuters.
  • Busy around the station and the shopping streets; the residential and villa streets are calmer.
