Overview

The Maxvorstadt was Munich's first planned extension. It is named after King Maximilian I Joseph and was largely built under King Ludwig I after 1825, when architects such as Leo von Klenze and Friedrich von Gärtner shaped its classicist look. Around 1900 it was almost fully built up.

It stretches from Odeonsplatz and Karlsplatz (Stachus) in the south-east to Georgenstraße in the north, and from the English Garden to the railway area along Arnulfstraße. On 31 December 2025, 52,501 people lived here on about 4.3 km², 122 per hectare. About 27% did not hold German citizenship.

Character

  • Universities: Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU), the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Hochschule München, the Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Music and Performing Arts, among others. The city portal describes residents as mostly between 20 and 30 years old.
  • Museums: the Alte and Neue Pinakothek, the Pinakothek der Moderne, the Lenbachhaus, Museum Brandhorst, the Glyptothek and the State Collections of Antiquities around Königsplatz, and the NS-Documentation Centre on the site of the former Nazi party headquarters.
  • Ludwigstraße with the State Library and the Siegestor on the border with Schwabing.
  • The Arnulfpark is a newer development on a former railway site in the south-west.
  • Cafés, pubs, small shops and galleries cluster around the universities.

  • Trams and buses cross the district, including the museum bus line 100.

Housing

Most homes are flats in multi-storey buildings in a densely built area, and many residents are young adults. Large parts of the district are taken up by university, museum and government buildings, as well as corporate headquarters, the Bavarian broadcaster and several courts and tax offices.

For families

Only about 10% of residents were under 18 at the end of 2025, the lowest share of all districts (city average 15.2%). Family amenities mentioned by the city portal include the playground and market on Josephsplatz and the sports facilities of Maßmannpark. The English Garden is a short walk away from the eastern part.

Evenings and nightlife

Mixed evenings

Many cafés, restaurants and pubs around the universities, plus museums and cultural venues; a young, student atmosphere rather than a club district.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Shaped by students and young adults; the share of children (about 10%) is the lowest in the city.
  • Museums and universities bring many visitors and students during the day.
  • Densely built, with 122 residents per hectare and limited green space inside the district.
