District
Bogenhausen
A large north-eastern district from the Isar to the city boundary, with villa quarters in Alt-Bogenhausen and Herzogpark, Munich's first high-rise estate in the Parkstadt, the Arabellapark and former villages with their own centres. Green, with many families, served by the U4 and S8.

Overview
Bogenhausen (district no. 13) goes back to the farming village pupinhusir, documented in 768/769, which was incorporated into Munich in 1892 and became a villa quarter in the late 19th century. The city portal calls it one of Munich's most diverse districts, at the transition from the inner city to the surrounding region, with seven parts: Alt-Bogenhausen, Herzogpark, Parkstadt, Oberföhring, Johanneskirchen, Englschalking and Daglfing.
On 31 December 2025, 95,540 people lived here on about 23.7 km², 40 per hectare. About 29% did not hold German citizenship.
Character
- Alt-Bogenhausen with listed Jugendstil villas is regarded as one of Munich's most exclusive residential areas; the Herzogpark has long been a top address.
- Parkstadt Bogenhausen, built 1955 to 1957, has Munich's first high-rise residential towers and is now a listed ensemble.
- Arabellapark, developed between 1965 and 1998, is a hotel, conference and office location with large residential complexes.
- Former villages such as Oberföhring, Johanneskirchen, Englschalking and Daglfing still have their own village centres.
- Sights: the Friedensengel above the Maximiliansanlagen, the Prinzregententheater, the Monacensia literature archive, the Villa Stuck on the border with Haidhausen and St. Georg church with its cemetery.

- Tram 17
- U-Bahn: U4 at Prinzregentenplatz, Böhmerwaldplatz, Richard-Strauss-Straße and Arabellapark.
- Trams: several tram lines connect the district with the city centre; lines 16 and 17 run from Arabellapark to Karlsplatz and the main station.
- S-Bahn: the S8 from Ostbahnhof towards the airport runs through the outer parts of the district.
Housing
Housing ranges from listed older villas with park-like gardens in Alt-Bogenhausen to the post-war towers and blocks of the Parkstadt and large residential complexes in the former villages and around the Arabellapark. Housing types therefore differ greatly from one part of the district to the next.
For families
About 16.7% of residents were under 18 at the end of 2025, above the city average of 15.2%. Parks such as the Maximiliansanlagen, Denninger Anger, Zamilapark, Schlösselgarten and the Bürgerpark Oberföhring, the Isar banks, the Cosimabad wave pool, the Prinzregentenbad in summer and ice skating at the Prinzregentenstadion in winter offer plenty for families.
Evenings and nightlife
Quiet evenings
Mainly residential; cultural evenings at the Prinzregententheater, birthplace of the Munich Opera Festival. The going-out quarters of Haidhausen are next door to the south.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- The U4 is the only U-Bahn line; outer areas rely on the S8, trams and buses.
- Until 27 November 2026 the U4 runs in two sections because of escalator work at Max-Weber-Platz; trams 16 and 17 are the alternative from Arabellapark.
- Housing varies widely, from villa quarters to large post-war estates; look at the specific part of the district.
