Overview

Salamanca (District 4) lies north-east of the historic centre, between the Paseo de la Castellana and Paseo de Recoletos to the west and the M-30 to the east, with Calle de Alcalá and O'Donnell to the south. It has about 150,000 residents and covers roughly 5.4 km².

It takes its name from the Marquess of Salamanca, who promoted the first part of the Ensanche here in the 1860s. Its six wards are Recoletos, Goya, Fuente del Berro, Guindalera, Lista and Castellana.

Character

  • Recoletos, Goya, Lista and Castellana follow a strict grid of wide, perpendicular streets, with residential and commercial buildings.
  • The "Golden Mile" of luxury shops runs along Serrano, Claudio Coello, Lagasca and Ortega y Gasset.
  • Many embassies and the IE Business School are in the district.
  • Guindalera and Fuente del Berro, further east, grew more spontaneously and include the Parque de las Avenidas area.

Housing

Flats in 19th- and 20th-century apartment buildings; Wikipedia notes that homes in the wards of Castellana and Recoletos are among the most expensive in Madrid. Asking rents are the highest in the city alongside Centro.

For families

A well-connected residential district. Retiro Park lies just south, across Calle de Alcalá and O'Donnell.

Evenings and nightlife

Mixed evenings

Mainly residential and commercial; Madrid's main late-night areas are in Centro.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Among the highest asking rents in Madrid; compare listings across the six wards before deciding.
  • Flats on the main commercial avenues, such as Serrano or Goya, may be noisier than those on side streets; visit at different times of day.
