Overview

Retiro (District 3) lies south-east of the historic centre. It covers about 5.4 km² and takes its name from Retiro Park, the public park for which it is known nationally. Its six wards are Pacífico, Adelfas, Estrella, Ibiza, Jerónimos and Niño Jesús.

The district is bounded by the Paseo del Prado to the west, Calle de Alcalá and O'Donnell to the north, the M-30 to the east and the railway lines leaving Atocha to the south.

Character

  • Apart from the park, the district is made up mostly of housing. Ibiza and Pacífico follow a regular grid; Estrella has more irregular streets that follow the slope of an old stream bed.
  • Jerónimos, between the park and the Paseo del Prado, takes much of its character from both.
  • The park's environmental classroom, La Cabaña del Retiro, runs free activities for all ages.

  • Metro L2

  • Atocha station on the edge of the district has Cercanías lines C-2, C-3, C-4, C-5, C-7, C-8 and C-10, plus regional and long-distance trains.
  • Several interurban bus lines to towns along the A-3 motorway start at Plaza de Conde de Casal.

For families

Retiro Park is on the doorstep, and the district has public and private schools and nurseries. The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid has a building in the district.

Evenings and nightlife

Quiet evenings

Mostly residential streets around the park; Madrid's main nightlife areas are in neighbouring Centro.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Asking rents are above the city average, especially near the park.
  • Homes close to Atocha station and the M-30 can be affected by rail and road traffic; visit at different times of day.
