In Spain most regular payments — salary, rent, electricity, internet and tax — go through a bank account by transfer or direct debit (domiciliación). Under EU rules any account in the SEPA area should be accepted, but in practice many landlords and employers ask for a Spanish account (an IBAN starting with ES).

Banks set their own conditions and fees. They must also meet anti-money-laundering obligations, which is why they ask for identity documents and sometimes for information about your income. The Banco de España notes that the law does not fix the exact documents, so what is enough can vary between banks.

Before you start

  • An identity document (passport, national ID card, TIE or EU registration certificate)
  • Your NIE, if you already have it

Documents you need

  • Passport or national ID card

    required
  • NIE (on your TIE

Many banks ask for it; requirements vary.

  • Proof of address (padrón registration

    optional
  • Employment contract or proof of income

    optional

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Compare a few banks

Compare the monthly fee, conditions for waiving it (for example paying in your salary), card fees and cash withdrawal costs. The Banco de España's customer portal explains your rights and the fees banks may charge. Choose based on your needs and check that the institution is supervised by the Banco de España.

  2. Step 2: Prepare your documents

    Most banks ask for:

    • an identity document: passport or national ID card, plus your TIE or EU registration certificate if you have one;
    • your NIE;
    • proof of address and, often, of income or employment (a contract or payslip).

If you have just arrived and do not yet have an NIE, ask in advance which documents the bank accepts.

  3. Step 3: Know your right to a basic payment account

Under Royal Decree-law 19/2017, anyone legally resident in the EU, including people without a fixed address, asylum seekers and people without a residence permit who cannot be expelled, has the right to open a basic payment account (cuenta de pago básica) if they do not already hold an account in Spain.

    • It covers opening, using and closing the account, cash deposits, cash withdrawals, debit or prepaid card payments and 120 payment operations a year in euros within the EU (transfers and direct debits).
    • The bank may charge at most €3 a month for these services (Order ECE/228/2019; the Banco de España may update the cap).
    • It is free for people in a vulnerable situation or at risk of financial exclusion whose household income is below thresholds based on the IPREM (Royal Decree 164/2019), for two years and renewable.
  4. Step 4: If a bank refuses

Make the request in writing and keep a dated copy with the list of documents you provided. A refusal of a basic payment account must be given to you in writing, free of charge and with the reasons, within 10 days. You can then complain to the bank's customer service and, if unresolved, to the Banco de España.

Watch out

Never send money to a "landlord" to reserve a flat before you have seen it and checked who owns it; see *Finding a flat in Barcelona*.

Banks must meet anti-money-laundering obligations and may refuse an account if the documents you provide are not sufficient; keep documents showing where your money comes from.

Common mistakes

  • Opening an account with conditions you cannot meet (for example a minimum monthly income), and then paying high monthly fees.
  • Arriving at the branch with an expired identity document; the Banco de España advises checking that your ID is valid before you apply.

Tips

  • Ask for an IBAN certificate (*certificado de titularidad*) once the account is open; employers and Social Security may ask for it.
  • Set up direct debits for rent and utilities as soon as the account is open, so that payments are not missed.

Frequently asked questions

Editorial answers written by our team, based on the sources below.

Can I open an account before I have an NIE?

Requirements vary between banks, because the law does not fix a list of documents. Some ask for an NIE, others may accept a passport alone; ask the bank before you go. Barcelona International Welcome notes that some banks will not even accept fee payments for foreigners' procedures with only a passport number.

Is the €3 basic account a bad deal?

It is a guaranteed minimum, not necessarily the cheapest option. Compare it with other accounts that waive fees if you meet certain conditions.
