Tipping
Tipping in Spain: optional, small and discreet
Newcomers from tipping-heavy countries often wonder how much to leave. In Spain service is included and tipping is voluntary; most diners who tip leave less than 5% of the bill. What a 2026 survey of Spanish diners shows about restaurants, bars and card-terminal tip prompts.
What newcomers often notice
Newcomers commonly report that tipping is far less of an expectation than in some countries:
- Service is included. Spain's official tourism site states that tipping is not obligatory because all establishments include the service charge, and that people who do tip in bars, restaurants, hotels and taxis usually leave between 5% and 10%.
- Most people tip little or case by case. A TheFork survey of Spanish diners reported by The Local Spain in August 2026 found that one in four always tips, 15% never do and 58% decide case by case. Of those who tip, 63% leave less than 5% of the bill, 35% leave 5-10% and only 2% leave more than 10%.
- Bars and cafés see the fewest tips. In the same survey, restaurants accounted for most tipping occasions and bars and cafés the fewest (9%).
- Tip prompts on card terminals are unpopular. 60% of respondents considered suggested tip amounts on payment screens inappropriate.
Context
Why it is different
According to the survey, the most common reason for not tipping is that the bill already includes service (61%), followed by paying by card (20%) and the fact that staff are already salaried (19%). The Local describes tipping as voluntary rather than expected, suggesting a couple of euros at a restaurant if you were happy with the food and service.
How it varies
- Type of place. People tip more often in restaurants and fine dining than in bars and cafés.
- Occasion. The Local suggests tipping only if you were happy with the food and service.
- Individuals. Habits vary widely; there is no fixed rule.
Practical tips
Tipping is optional; at a restaurant, a few euros or up to about 10% for very good service is generous by local standards. At bars and cafés, leaving nothing or a few coins of change is common. If a card terminal suggests a tip, you can choose not to add one.
