District
Sants-Montjuïc
Barcelona's largest district by area, from the former industrial town of Sants and Poble-sec at the foot of Montjuïc to the port and the Zona Franca, with the Montjuïc park, major transport hubs and a mix of dense residential streets.

Overview
Sants-Montjuïc (District 3) lies in the south of the city. At about 22.9 km² it is Barcelona's largest district, because it includes the Montjuïc mountain, the Zona Franca industrial estate and most of the port, areas with few or no residents. It had about 195,700 residents in its 2025 neighbourhood table.
Its residential neighbourhoods are Sants (the largest, about 47,000 people), El Poble-sec (about 40,000, below Montjuïc), La Marina de Port, Sants-Badal (the densest), La Bordeta, Hostafrancs, La Font de la Guatlla and La Marina del Prat Vermell. It borders L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, El Prat de Llobregat, Les Corts, the Eixample and Ciutat Vella.
Character
- Sants was an independent municipality until it was annexed to Barcelona in 1897. In the 19th century it industrialised early, with textile factories such as Vapor Vell (1842) and Vapor Nou (1849), which gave it a working-class character.
- Carrer de la Creu Coberta, running through Hostafrancs and Sants, is known for its many shops.
- Montjuïc is a large hill and park on the district's seaward side.
- The district comprises very different areas, from residential neighbourhoods to industrial and port zones.

Housing
Housing ranges from dense residential streets in Sants, Hostafrancs, Sants-Badal and Poble-sec to the new development area of La Marina del Prat Vermell. Barcelona's rent caps apply; check the previous rent and reference index before signing. We do not cite a district-level rent figure.
For families
Montjuïc offers large green areas close to Poble-sec and La Font de la Guatlla, and the Marina del Prat Vermell project includes a central park of about two hectares. School places are allocated by address through the city's admission system.
Evenings and nightlife
Mixed evenings
Largely residential neighbourhoods alongside port, industrial and parkland areas; evening activity is concentrated on local streets rather than across the whole district.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- Sants-Badal is the district's most densely populated neighbourhood.
- La Marina del Prat Vermell is a city urban-development project planned for up to 30,000 residents on almost 80 hectares, with a new metro L9 connection; it had about 2,900 residents in the 2025 neighbourhood table, so check which services already exist on your street.
