District

Sant Andreu

A district in the north of the city by the Besòs river, built around the former town of Sant Andreu de Palomar, with an industrial past, an active local associations scene, the Parc de la Pegaso and the La Sagrera transport and urban-renewal project.

Overview

Sant Andreu (District 9) lies in the north of Barcelona, bordered by the Besòs river and the towns of Sant Adrià de Besòs and Santa Coloma de Gramenet. It covers about 6.6 km² and had about 149,800 residents in 2022.

Its seven neighbourhoods are Sant Andreu de Palomar (the most populous, about 57,800 residents in 2019), La Sagrera, Trinitat Vella, Baró de Viver, Bon Pastor, El Congrés i els Indians and Navas.

Character

  • Sant Andreu de Palomar was an independent municipality until it was annexed to Barcelona by royal decree on 20 April 1897; its old centre gives the district its name.
  • The district has an industrial past: the Pegaso truck and bus factory (formerly Hispano-Suiza) stood where the Parc de la Pegaso is today.
  • Local associations (entitats) are active in Sant Andreu de Palomar, Bon Pastor, Trinitat Vella and La Sagrera.
  • La Sagrera is one of Barcelona's three major urban transformation projects, according to the city council.

Housing

Housing ranges from the older centre of Sant Andreu de Palomar to blocks in the neighbourhoods that grew around it. Barcelona's rent caps apply; check the previous rent and reference index before signing. We do not cite a district-level rent figure.

For families

The Parc de la Pegaso is a local green space on the former factory site. Active local associations organise neighbourhood life. School places are allocated by address through the city's admission system.

Evenings and nightlife

Quiet evenings

A mainly residential district with local bars and community life rather than a nightlife scene.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • La Sagrera is a large ongoing urban-transformation area; check for construction works near the flat you are considering.
  • The district is on the city's northern edge; check your commute to work or school before signing.
