Overview

Nou Barris (District 8) lies at the northern edge of the city, between the Serra de Collserola and Avinguda Meridiana. It covers about 8 km² and had about 179,600 residents in 2024. Its name means "nine neighbourhoods" (or "new neighbourhoods"), but it now has 13: Can Peguera, Canyelles, Ciutat Meridiana, La Guineueta, Porta, La Prosperitat, Les Roquetes, Torre Baró, La Trinitat Nova, El Turó de la Peira, Vallbona, Verdun, and Vilapicina i la Torre Llobeta.

Character

  • Most neighbourhoods grew in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s on the former rural outskirts of Horta and Sant Andreu. Residents organised strongly through neighbourhood associations in response to chaotic urban development.
  • Since about 2000 the district has attracted many immigrants, partly because housing is relatively cheap, which has changed its population and its shops.
  • The district headquarters, municipal archive and the Biblioteca Popular de Nou Barris are in the former Institut Mental de la Santa Creu.
  • The Ateneu Popular de Nou Barris in Les Roquetes, in a former asphalt factory taken over by residents in 1977, is a volunteer-run cultural centre known for circus, theatre and concerts.

Housing

Most housing dates from the district's growth between the 1950s and 1970s. The Catalan Wikipedia notes that housing has been relatively cheap compared with other districts; Barcelona's rent caps apply here too. We do not cite a district-level rent figure.

For families

The Parc Central de Nou Barris is the district's main park, and the Collserola hills border the upper neighbourhoods. Cultural centres such as the Ateneu Popular host circus, theatre and concerts. School places are allocated by address through the city's admission system.

Evenings and nightlife

Quiet evenings

A residential district with neighbourhood bars and community cultural venues rather than a nightlife scene.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Some upper neighbourhoods are on hillsides near Collserola; check slopes and the walk to the metro.
  • The district is on the city's northern edge; check your commute to work or school before signing.
