It covers about 5.44 km² and had 22,382 residents in the 2021 census (INE).
Landmarks include the Lisbon Oceanarium, the Pavilhão do Conhecimento science centre, the Altice Arena, the Vasco da Gama Tower, a riverside cable car, a marina and the Gare do Oriente station with its platform vaults designed by Santiago Calatrava.
