Overview

The parish of Estrela is named after the area around the Jardim da Estrela and the Basílica da Estrela, west of the city centre. The parish council describes it as rich in heritage, with the historic Madragoa quarter, the Palácio de São Bento (the national parliament) and more embassies than any other parish in the city. It had 20,267 residents in the 2021 census (INE).

Landmarks named by the parish council include the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, the Museu do Oriente, the Convento das Bernardas with the Museu da Marioneta, the Basílica da Estrela and the Chafariz da Esperança, and many façades covered in azulejos (painted tiles).

Character

  • Heritage and embassies. Historic buildings, museums, the parliament and many embassies.
  • Food. The parish council highlights traditional restaurants and small taverns (tasquinhas) alongside newer fusion cooking.
  • Population. In 2021, 14.9% of residents were under 15 (Lisbon: 13.0%), 20.7% were 65 or older (Lisbon: 23.4%) and 14.4% were foreign nationals (Lisbon: 10.1%).

Getting around

  • Tram 28E
  • Tram 25E
  • Tram 15E
  • CP Cascais line (Santos)
  • Trams: 28E stops at the Basílica da Estrela on its way between Campo de Ourique and Martim Moniz; 25E runs through Lapa and Santos to Praça da Figueira; 15E runs along the river, stopping at Santos, the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga and Avenida Infante Santo, towards Belém in one direction and Cais do Sodré and Praça da Figueira in the other.
  • Trains: the Santos stop on CP's Cascais line, by the river, is reached by tram 15E or 25E.
  • Metro: none in the parish yet. The new circular line under construction will add stations at Estrela and Santos; in March 2026 the Metro's chair told Parliament the aim was to open it in the first quarter of 2027.

Housing

We have no official rent figures for the parish; the municipality of Lisbon had a median rent of €17.42 per m² for new leases in the first quarter of 2026 (INE data reported by ECO). Ask whether the building has a lift, and about heating and humidity.

For families

Children under 15 made up 14.9% of residents in 2021, one of the higher shares among central parishes. The parish council names the Jardim da Estrela and the Tapada das Necessidades as its main green spaces. Public school places are allocated by area of residence.

The parish council issues residence certificates online to people on its electoral roll; others go to its office at Rua Almeida Brandão 39 with two witnesses registered in the parish who are not relatives.

Evenings and nightlife

Mixed evenings

The parish council emphasises restaurants, taverns and museums rather than nightlife; visit a flat in the evening to judge noise.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • No Metro until the circular line opens; trams, buses and the Santos train stop are the main links today.
  • Ask about lifts and stairs if you have small children or mobility needs.
  • Higher-than-average share of children and of foreign residents (2021 census).
