Belém

The current parish of Belém was created in 2012 by joining the former parishes of Santa Maria de Belém and São Francisco Xavier. The parish council describes it as the westernmost parish of Lisbon and the largest in area. It had 16,546 residents in the 2021 census (INE).

Belém is home to some of Lisbon's best-known monuments, which the parish council lists as the Torre de Belém, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, the MAAT museum and the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. It was from the old Restelo beach that the caravels of Vasco da Gama and Pedro Álvares Cabral set sail in the 15th century.

• Older population. In 2021, 26.5% of residents were 65 or older (Lisbon: 23.4%) and 14.9% were under 15 (Lisbon: 13.0%).
• Fewer foreign residents than the city average: 7.1% in 2021 (Lisbon: 10.1%).

• Tram: 15E runs along the river from Praça da Figueira and Cais do Sodré, with stops at Altinho (MAAT), Belém (Museu dos Coches), Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and Centro Cultural de Belém, continuing to Algés.
• Trains: Belém station on CP's Cascais line, between Cais do Sodré and Cascais. With a Navegante Municipal Lisboa pass, CP journeys between Cais do Sodré and Algés are included (check cp.pt).
• Metro: there is no Metro station in Belém.

We have no official rent figures for the parish; the municipality of Lisbon had a median rent of €17.42 per m² for new leases in the first quarter of 2026 (INE data reported by ECO). Check commuting times carefully, since the parish has no Metro.

Children under 15 made up 14.9% of residents in 2021, above the city average. Public school places are allocated by area of residence; contact the school serving your address.
