Arroios

Dense, central and one of Lisbon's most international parishes: 33,302 residents in 2021, almost a quarter of them foreign nationals. Green-line Metro stations at Intendente, Anjos, Arroios and Alameda link it quickly to the centre.

Overview

Arroios is a parish in central Lisbon created in the 2012–2013 reorganisation of the city's parishes from the former parishes of São Jorge de Arroios and Pena, almost all of Anjos and a small part of São José. It covers about 2.13 km².

In the 2021 census it had 33,302 residents (INE). 23.3% of residents were foreign nationals, compared with 10.1% in the municipality of Lisbon as a whole — one of the highest shares in the city.

AIMA's information-only office Lisboa II is in the Anjos area (Rua Álvaro Coutinho 14), and the Lisbon tenants' association AIL has its seat on Avenida Almirante Reis.

Character

  • A working-age population. In 2021, 60.2% of residents were aged 25 to 64 (Lisbon: 53.5%), 20.0% were 65 or older (Lisbon: 23.4%) and 10.4% were under 15 (Lisbon: 13.0%).
  • International. Almost one resident in four held a foreign nationality in 2021, the second-highest share among Lisbon's parishes after Santa Maria Maior.
  • Dense. More than 33,000 residents on about 2.13 km² works out at roughly 15,600 residents per km².

Getting around

  • Metro Green line
  • Metro Red line (Alameda)
  • Tram 28E
  • Metro: the Green line has stations at Intendente, Anjos, Arroios and Alameda, reaching Martim Moniz, Rossio, Baixa-Chiado and Cais do Sodré in one direction and Areeiro, Roma, Alvalade and Campo Grande in the other. At Alameda you can change to the Red line towards Saldanha, Oriente and the airport.
  • Tram: tram 28E starts at Martim Moniz and passes Rua da Palma and the Anjos church on its way to Graça and the historic centre.

Housing

We have no official rent figures for the parish; the municipality of Lisbon had a median rent of €17.42 per m² for new leases in the first quarter of 2026 (INE data reported by ECO). Visit flats in person, check for humidity and street noise, and read the tenant rights guide before signing.

For families

Children under 15 made up 10.4% of residents in 2021, below the city average of 13.0%. Public school places are allocated by area of residence; contact the school serving your address, and plan time for equivalence if your children studied abroad.

Evenings and nightlife

Mixed evenings

We have no official data on nightlife. The parish is busy and central; visit a flat in the evening and check how much street noise reaches the bedrooms.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Almost a quarter of residents were foreign nationals in 2021 (INE), the second-highest share in Lisbon.
  • Flats on main roads can be noisy; ask for a room facing the back of the building.
  • The parish is compact and central: the Green line reaches Rossio and Baixa-Chiado in a few stops.
