District

Alvalade

A residential parish built largely from the 1930s and 1940s around Avenida de Roma, the Bairro de Alvalade and Campo Grande, with the Green and Yellow Metro lines, the university city nearby and a share of children slightly above the city average.

Overview

The parish of Alvalade took its current form in the 2012 reorganisation of Lisbon's parishes (in force since 29 September 2013), uniting the former parishes of Alvalade, Campo Grande and São João de Brito, plus small parts of Marvila and São Domingos de Benfica. It had 33,309 residents in the 2021 census (INE).

According to the parish council, the area was mostly fields, farms and gardens until the mid-20th century. Its main growth came from the 1930s with planned developments such as Avenida de Roma, the Bairro das Estacas, the Bairro de São Miguel, the towers of Avenida dos Estados Unidos da América and, in the 1940s, the Bairro de Alvalade — which is why the council calls it a symbol of "modern Lisbon".

Character

  • Planned neighbourhoods. Much of the parish was built through mid-20th-century urban plans rather than growing street by street.
  • Older and Portuguese-majority population. In 2021, 24.7% of residents were 65 or older (Lisbon: 23.4%) and 5.4% were foreign nationals (Lisbon: 10.1%).
  • University city nearby. From the 1980s new buildings went up in the university city (Cidade Universitária), including the national archives at Torre do Tombo.

Getting around

  • Metro Green line
  • Metro Yellow line (Campo Grande, Cidade Universitária)
  • Roma-Areeiro railway station
  • Metro: the Green line stops at Roma, Alvalade and Campo Grande; the parish council notes these stations opened in the 1970s. At Campo Grande you can change to the Yellow line, which also serves Cidade Universitária.
  • Trains: the Roma-Areeiro railway station is an interchange close to the Roma and Areeiro Metro stations.
  • Cycling: the parish council highlights the cycle paths built in recent years.

Housing

We have no official rent figures for the parish; the municipality of Lisbon had a median rent of €17.42 per m² for new leases in the first quarter of 2026 (INE data reported by ECO). In older buildings, ask about lifts, heating and recent renovation when you visit.

For families

Children under 15 made up 13.9% of residents in 2021, slightly above the city average of 13.0%. The Jardim do Campo Grande and Quinta do Narigão were refurbished in the 21st century, and the parish council lists a dog park and an adventure park among new facilities. Public school places are allocated by area of residence.

Evenings and nightlife

Quiet evenings

A mainly residential area; the parish council's description focuses on housing, green spaces and facilities rather than nightlife.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Slightly more children and older residents than the city average (2021 census), and well served by the Metro.
  • Check the walking distance to Roma, Alvalade or Campo Grande stations from a given flat.
  • Campo Grande is a major interchange between the Green and Yellow lines.
