Lisbon's public transport is run by several operators that share one ticketing system:
- Metropolitano de Lisboa runs the Metro, with four lines — Blue (Azul), Yellow (Amarela), Green (Verde) and Red (Vermelha). Trains run from 6:30 and you can enter until 1:00.
- Carris runs the city's buses, the historic trams (elétricos) such as 28E, 25E, 15E, 18E and 24E, and the funiculars (ascensores) and the Santa Justa lift.
- CP runs suburban trains on the Cascais, Sintra, Azambuja and Sado lines; Fertagus runs trains to the south bank; and ferries cross the Tagus.
- Carris Metropolitana runs buses across the wider metropolitan area.
The Navegante card is the common smartcard. The fares below are those published by Metro de Lisboa and Carris for 2026.

Monthly passes in 2026
Passes are loaded on a personalised Navegante card and are valid for a calendar month:
- Navegante Metropolitano – €40 a month, valid on public transport across the Lisbon metropolitan area, including Metro, Carris and CP's Sintra, Cascais, Sado and Azambuja lines.
- Navegante Municipal – €30 a month, valid within one municipality (for example Lisbon).
- Navegante Metropolitano +65 (seniors, retirees and pensioners) – €20 a month.
- Navegante Família – €80 (metropolitan) or €60 (municipal) a month for a household.
- Free passes: young people under 23 can load the Navegante Metropolitano free of charge (still loaded monthly), and people aged 65 and over with tax residence in Lisbon get the urban pass free under a City Council measure.
- Social tariff (Circula PT): 25% or 50% discounts for people on low incomes and certain benefits.
Getting a Navegante card
- Personalised card (with your name and photo): €7 (€3.50 for under-23s), or €12 for urgent issue. Metro de Lisboa issues it at ticket offices in several stations, including Jardim Zoológico, Colégio Militar/Luz, Marquês de Pombal, Campo Grande, Rossio, Baixa-Chiado, Cais do Sodré, Oriente and Aeroporto. You need it for monthly passes.
- Occasional card: €0.50, for single and day tickets or pay-as-you-go Zapping credit.
Load passes at Metro ticket machines and ticket offices or at other operators' ticket offices; CP notes that some passes can be reloaded at Multibanco ATMs after the first load at a ticket office.
Single tickets and pay-as-you-go (2026)
- Carris/Metro single ticket: €1.90, valid for one hour on the whole Carris and Metro network (not for two consecutive Metro entries).
- Zapping (prepaid credit of €3 to €40 on a Navegante card): €1.72 per one-hour Carris/Metro journey.
- Bank card (contactless) at Metro gates: €1.92 per Metro journey; tap the same card at entry and exit.
- 24-hour ticket: €7.25 (Carris/Metro), €10.35 including the Cacilhas ferry, €11.40 including CP trains.
- Paying on board Carris costs more: €2.30 on buses, €3.30 on trams, €4.30 on funiculars (up to two trips) and €6.20 on the Santa Justa lift.
The Metro network
- Blue line: Reboleira – Santa Apolónia, via Jardim Zoológico, Praça de Espanha, São Sebastião, Marquês de Pombal, Restauradores and Baixa-Chiado.
- Yellow line: Odivelas – Rato, via Campo Grande, Cidade Universitária, Entre Campos, Campo Pequeno, Saldanha and Marquês de Pombal.
- Green line: Telheiras – Cais do Sodré, via Campo Grande, Alvalade, Roma, Areeiro, Alameda, Arroios, Anjos, Intendente, Martim Moniz, Rossio and Baixa-Chiado.
- Red line: São Sebastião – Aeroporto, via Saldanha, Alameda, Olaias, Chelas, Olivais, Oriente, Moscavide and Encarnação.
A new circular line between Rato and Cais do Sodré, with new stations at Estrela and Santos, is under construction. In March 2026 the chair of Metropolitano de Lisboa told Parliament the company was working to open it in the first quarter of 2027. Check the Metro's website for temporary closures.
Trams, buses and lifts
Carris tram 28E runs from Martim Moniz through Graça, the cathedral, Chiado and Estrela to Campo de Ourique (Prazeres); 25E links Praça da Figueira with Lapa, Estrela and Campo de Ourique; 15E runs along the river from Praça da Figueira and Cais do Sodré to Belém and Algés.
Trains and ferries
CP's Cascais line starts at Cais do Sodré and serves Santos, Alcântara-Mar and Belém; the Sintra line starts at Rossio; the Azambuja line passes Oriente and Santa Apolónia. With a Navegante Municipal Lisboa pass, CP journeys within the city (for example Cais do Sodré – Algés) are included; check cp.pt for the exact sections. Fertagus trains and the Transtejo/Soflusa ferries to the south bank are separate operators; check which passes they accept.
Watch out
Validate your card at every boarding, including on trams and buses.
A Navegante Municipal pass bought for Lisbon is not valid for trips into other municipalities; choose the Metropolitano if you cross municipal borders.
Common mistakes
Buying single tickets every day instead of a monthly pass; a pass pays off quickly if you commute. Paying on board trams and lifts, which costs far more than a pre-loaded ticket.
Tips
Order a personalised card for each family member under 23; the pass is free but must be loaded each month. Monthly passes are valid for the calendar month, so load the next month's pass before the 1st. Use the 24-hour ticket for days with several trips, such as your first days of appointments.
