In a life-threatening situation, call 112. For everything else there is a better number: calling the right service first gets you help faster and keeps 112 free for real emergencies. Save the numbers below in your phone now, together with your home address, so you can give it quickly in stressful moments.
Emergencies – 112
- 112: police, fire brigade or ambulance when life, health or property is in immediate danger, such as a serious accident, fire, a crime in progress or someone who is unconscious or not breathing.
- IN Amsterdam notes that 112 operators speak Dutch and English and may also help in French or German.
- If you are deaf or hard of hearing, there is a text equivalent via 0800 8112.
- Only 112 or a GP can send an ambulance.
- NL-Alert: in a serious local emergency the government sends warnings by text to mobile phones in the area, telling you what to do.
Police when it is not an emergency
- 0900 8844: police non-emergency line, for situations that are not urgent. Text equivalent for deaf and hard-of-hearing people: 0900 1844.
- 0800 7000 (Meld Misdaad Anoniem): report a crime anonymously.
Urgent medical care
- Your GP (huisarts) during opening hours, for anything that is not life-threatening.
- GP out-of-hours service (huisartsenpost) in the evening, at night, at weekends and on public holidays, for problems that cannot wait until your GP is open, such as chest tightness, severe abdominal pain, a very sick child or an accident at home. You are assessed by phone first.
- Hospital emergency department (spoedeisende hulp, SEH): call the huisartsenpost first unless the situation is life-threatening; then call 112. Bring identification and your health insurance card.
GP and huisartsenpost care does not count towards your deductible; hospital emergency care does.
Mental health and personal safety
- 113 (113 Zelfmoordpreventie): if you are thinking about suicide or worried about someone. Calling 113 is free; you can also chat online, anonymously.
- 0800-2000 (Veilig Thuis): advice and help with domestic violence and child abuse, available 24/7 and anonymously.
- 0900-0101 (Slachtofferhulp Nederland): support for victims of crime, accidents and disasters. Its website also explains other ways to get in touch if your provider does not allow calls to 0900 numbers.
Gas, power and other faults
- 0800-9009: the national fault number for a gas smell or a gas, power or meter outage. You are connected directly to your local grid operator.
Amsterdam numbers
- 088 00 30 600: Amsterdam GP out-of-hours posts (Huisartsenposten Amsterdam), weekdays from 17:00 to 08:00 and 24 hours on weekends and national holidays.
- 085 105 0757: emergency dental help in Amsterdam and surrounding cities, including Haarlem, according to IN Amsterdam. Contact your own dentist first if you have one; many have out-of-hours arrangements.
Outside Amsterdam, your GP's voicemail or website gives the number of the local huisartsenpost.
Watch out
Do not go to a hospital emergency department for a non-urgent problem without calling the huisartsenpost first. You may be sent elsewhere and the visit can cost part of your deductible.
Do not call 112 to report something that happened earlier and is no longer dangerous. Use 0900 8844 instead.
Common mistakes
Not knowing your full address, including postcode, when calling for help. Calling the GP practice at night and waiting for a call-back instead of phoning the huisartsenpost.
Tips
Save 112, 0900 8844, your GP, your local huisartsenpost and 0800-9009 in your phone today. Keep your health insurance card and ID together so you can take them quickly. If you do not speak Dutch, start the call by saying "English, please" and give your location first.
