Bos en Lommer
A mid-rise residential neighbourhood in Amsterdam-West, built mainly from the late 1920s to the 1950s around the Bos en Lommerweg and the Erasmuspark, with metro stations on the western ring line, trams to the centre and Station Sloterdijk nearby.

Overview
Bos en Lommer lies in the West district, bounded by the Haarlemmerweg to the north, the Jan van Galenstraat to the south, the Westelijk Marktkanaal to the east and the ring railway (Ringspoorbaan) to the west; the A10 ring road cuts through the area. It covers about 2.7 km² (postcodes 1055, 1056 and 1061).
The name comes from a farmstead on the Sloterdijkermeerweg that was demolished in 1940. Bos en Lommer was a city district of its own until 2010, when it became part of the new district of West.
Character
Bos en Lommer was built in phases, and you can read the history of Dutch housing in its streets.
- 1920s and 1930s: traditional closed housing blocks near the Admiraal de Ruijterweg.
- Late 1930s: some of the first experiments with open row housing (strokenbouw), notably in the Landlust neighbourhood, followed by an overall plan in 1939.
- 1940s and 1950s: the western part, including the Kolenkitbuurt, built after the Second World War.
Most buildings are around four storeys, with streets named after the family of William of Orange, naval heroes and historical figures. The Erasmuspark, laid out in 1927 and renovated several times since, is the neighbourhood's main park.
In 2007 Bos en Lommer was among the neighbourhoods selected for extra national investment in housing and services, which brought renovation and a changing population mix in the years that followed.
Getting around
- Metro 50
- Metro 51
- Tram 13
- Tram 19
- Metro: lines 50 and 51 stop at De Vlugtlaan and Jan van Galenstraat on the western ring, towards Station Sloterdijk and Isolatorweg in one direction and Lelylaan, Station Zuid and (line 51) the city centre in the other.
- Train: Station Sloterdijk (trains and metro) is just to the north-west.
- Tram 13 runs along the Bos en Lommerweg and the Burgemeester De Vlugtlaan towards Slotermeer and Geuzenveld; towards the centre it is currently diverted and ends at the Zeilstraat in Zuid.
- Tram 19 connects the area with Station Sloterdijk and, via Leidseplein and Weesperplein, with Amsterdam-Oost; it is also diverted around roadworks.
The Oranje Loper roadworks on the De Clercqstraat last into 2027, and the tram network was reorganised on 29 March 2026, so check the GVB or 9292 planner for current routes.
Housing
Homes are mostly flats in buildings of about four storeys, from closed interwar blocks to post-war open rows, with some newer, denser developments.
There is no official rent figure for Bos en Lommer alone. According to I amsterdam, Amsterdam rents are among the highest in the Netherlands and social housing has waiting times of typically 8 to 18 years, so most newcomers rent privately. Check whether a rent falls under the points system before you sign (see our tenant rights guide).
For families
The Erasmuspark is the main green space and play area.
Register in good time for primary school, as many schools keep waiting lists; I amsterdam recommends Scholen op de Kaart to compare schools near your address.
Evenings and nightlife
Quiet evenings
Bos en Lommer is mainly residential, with local cafés and restaurants along its main streets. For bars, clubs and events, residents usually head to the Westerpark area, Oud-West or the centre.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- The A10 ring road and the ring railway run through or along the area; check traffic and train noise at the specific address.
- Trams 13 and 19 are diverted around the Oranje Loper roadworks into 2027; the metro on the ring line is the most reliable fast link for many trips.
- Conditions differ between the older blocks near the Admiraal de Ruijterweg and the post-war western part; visit both before deciding.
