Overview

Howth is a peninsular village and outer suburb of Dublin covering most of Howth Head, which forms the northern boundary of Dublin Bay; the island of Ireland's Eye lies offshore. Its only neighbouring district on land is Sutton. Howth is in Fingal County Council's area. It has been settled since prehistoric times, was a fishing village and small trading port from at least the 14th century, and is home to Howth Castle, one of the oldest occupied buildings in Ireland.

Character

Howth today mixes suburban housing with wild hillside and heathland, golf courses, cliff and coastal paths and a busy commercial fishing harbour, one of Ireland's "tier 2" fishing ports.

  • The village has multiple restaurants, two convenience stores and a post office; the nearest supermarket is at Sutton Cross.
  • Large numbers of tourists visit for the views from the summit, the piers and locally sourced seafood.
  • Small boats run to Ireland's Eye from the West Pier in summer; the island is known for birdwatching.
  • The National Transport Museum of Ireland is in Howth.

Getting around

  • DART (Howth)
  • Dublin Bus
  • DART: Howth station is a terminus of the DART, with trains along the coast through the city centre and south to Greystones.
  • Buses: Dublin Bus routes serve Howth village and Howth Summit. Check the TFI Journey Planner for current routes.

Housing

Howth is described as a busy and affluent suburb. The Howth–Malahide local electoral area had a standardised average rent for new tenancies above the County Dublin average in Q1 2026 (see the cost note).

For families

Families have the harbour, cliff paths and heathland of Howth Head on the doorstep. For larger shops, families use Sutton Cross or neighbouring areas.

Evenings and nightlife

Quiet evenings

Howth has a range of restaurants and pubs, especially around the harbour, but it is a small village at the end of the DART line rather than a nightlife area.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Daily shopping is limited in the village; the nearest supermarket is at Sutton Cross.
  • Large numbers of tourists visit for the views, the piers and seafood, so the harbour area can be busy.
  • Howth is in Fingal County Council's area for local services.
