District

Neuhausen-Nymphenburg

A large, green district west of the centre that combines lively Neuhausen around Rotkreuzplatz with villa quarters and the Baroque palace and park of Nymphenburg. With more than 100,000 residents it is one of Munich's three most populous districts.

Overview

District no. 9 joins Neuhausen, first mentioned in 1170 and incorporated into Munich in 1890, and Nymphenburg, which grew around the palace begun in 1664 and became part of Munich in 1899 together with the Hirschgarten.

On 31 December 2025, 102,527 people lived here on about 12.9 km², 79 per hectare. Only Ramersdorf-Perlach and Thalkirchen-Obersendling-Forstenried-Fürstenried-Solln have more residents. About 26% did not hold German citizenship.

Character

  • Neuhausen: the city portal describes it as a pleasant place to live with traditional shops, good restaurants and a small-town feel. Its heart is the busy Rotkreuzplatz, with a weekly market, a Christmas market and the Neuhausen music night. Large residential and commercial buildings from before the First World War line Nymphenburger Straße; nearly half of the housing stock is under ensemble or monument protection.
  • Creative quarter on the former Luitpold barracks site, with studios and workshops.
  • Nymphenburg: often called a green oasis, with Nymphenburg Palace and its large park, the Botanical Garden to the north, villas from the late 19th century around the Rondell Neuwittelsbach and Jugendstil buildings in the Gern villa colony.
  • Hirschgarten: a large park with one of Munich's biggest beer gardens, a deer enclosure, playgrounds, barbecue areas and a skate park.

Getting around

  • U1
  • U7
  • U-Bahn: U1 and U7, for example at Rotkreuzplatz and Gern.
  • Trams and buses serve the parts of the district away from the U-Bahn, including Nymphenburg.
  • The Bürgerbüro at Leonrodstraße 21 is one of the city's six citizens' offices.

Housing

Neuhausen has many older apartment buildings, railway workers' estates in the south and interwar housing estates; Nymphenburg and Gern have villa quarters. The city portal describes the district as very green, even along the Landshuter Allee section of the Mittlerer Ring, which is lined with large trees.

For families

About 14.5% of residents were under 18 at the end of 2025 (city average 15.2%). The Hirschgarten with its playgrounds and deer enclosure, the palace park and the year-round Dantebad, whose 50-metre outdoor pool is heated to about 30 °C in winter, are popular with families.

Evenings and nightlife

Mixed evenings

Restaurants and local events around Rotkreuzplatz, concert and event halls and the creative quarter in Neuhausen; Nymphenburg is quieter. The Hirschgarten has one of the city's largest beer gardens.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • A large and varied district. Neuhausen near the centre is urban and busy, while Nymphenburg and Gern are quieter and greener.
  • The Mittlerer Ring (Landshuter Allee) runs through the district; check traffic noise near it.
  • The U-Bahn stations are in the Neuhausen part (for example Rotkreuzplatz and Gern); from Nymphenburg you usually rely on trams and buses, so check your commute.
