District
Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt
A dense inner-city district south and west of the old town, stretching from the main station and the Oktoberfest grounds to the Gärtnerplatz and Glockenbach quarters, the centre of Munich's LGBTQ scene, and down to the Isar and the Schlachthof area.

Overview
District no. 2 joins two very different parts of the city. The Ludwigsvorstadt, west of the old town, contains the Hauptbahnhof (main station), the Theresienwiese where the Oktoberfest takes place, and the university hospitals' clinic quarter. The Isarvorstadt, between the old town and the Isar, includes the Gärtnerplatz, the Glockenbachviertel, the Dreimühlenviertel, the Schlachthof (slaughterhouse) quarter and the Deutsches Museum on its island.
On 31 December 2025, 50,048 people lived here on about 4.4 km², 114 residents per hectare, more than twice the city average. About 26% of residents did not hold German citizenship.
Character
- Bahnhofsviertel around the main station: hotels, offices and restaurants, rebuilt after the Second World War; very busy. South of the station, according to the city portal, mainly the Turkish-origin community has settled since the 1960s, with many shops, cafés, restaurants and cultural institutions.
- Theresienwiese and Wiesnviertel: outside big events, a quiet area with office buildings from the late 19th century; the Theresienwiese is used for jogging, skating and kite-flying.
- Klinikviertel: shaped by the university hospitals and institutes, with traffic-calmed streets.
- Gärtnerplatz and Glockenbachviertel: the city portal calls this an "absolute" scene quarter, with shops, cafés, fashion, art and antiques, and the centre of Munich's LGBTQ scene. The round Gärtnerplatz with the Staatstheater is its centrepiece.
- Schlachthof and Dreimühlenviertel: the former cattle market site now hosts the new Münchner Volkstheater and the cultural project Bahnwärter Thiel.

- Hauptbahnhof: all S-Bahn trunk-line services, four U-Bahn lines, regional and long-distance trains. The central coach station (ZOB) for long-distance and international buses is at Hackerbrücke.
- U-Bahn: U4 and U5 at Theresienwiese; U3 and U6 at Goetheplatz and Poccistraße; U1, U2, U7 and U8 at Fraunhoferstraße; Sendlinger Tor on the edge of the old town.
- Trams and buses cross the district.
Note that the U3 and U6 stations Poccistraße and Goetheplatz are being renovated, with interruptions until August 2027 (see public transport in Munich).
Housing
The Isarvorstadt has a high share of older apartment buildings (Altbau), for example on Hans-Sachs-Straße, which makes it a popular place to live. In the Ludwigsvorstadt, originally planned as a quarter of villas and apartment buildings, administration, offices and hotels have replaced part of the housing since the war.
For families
Only about 11% of residents were under 18 at the end of 2025, one of the lowest shares in the city (average 15.2%). Families use the Isar meadows, the Alter Südfriedhof and the Theresienwiese outside festival times; in summer, residents swim at the Schyrenbad in neighbouring Untergiesing.
Evenings and nightlife
Lively nightlife
Gärtnerplatz and the Glockenbachviertel are among Munich's best-known going-out areas, with bars, pubs and traditional inns, and the Schlachthof area has theatres and venues. Around the Theresienwiese, the Oktoberfest brings almost six million visitors a year.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- The Oktoberfest on the Theresienwiese draws almost six million visitors a year, which affects the surrounding streets while it runs.
- The station quarter has particularly heavy traffic and bustle, according to the city portal.
- Renovation of the U3/U6 stations Poccistraße and Goetheplatz interrupts services in phases until 1 August 2027.
- Nightlife around Gärtnerplatz and in the Glockenbachviertel can bring noise; if you sleep lightly, look at quieter side streets or courtyard-facing flats.
