District
Au-Haidhausen
Two former villages on the east bank of the Isar, close to the centre. Haidhausen has a largely pre-1914 townscape, the Franzosenviertel and a lively but residential feel; the Au is quieter, with the Auer Dult fair and the Nockherberg. Very densely populated, with good S-Bahn and U-Bahn links.

Overview
District no. 5 lies across the Isar from the old town. Haidhausen was first documented in 808, supplied clay for bricks used in the Frauenkirche and the Residenz, and was incorporated into Munich in 1854, as was the Au, a former fishing village first mentioned in 1340.
On 31 December 2025, 64,122 people lived here on about 4.2 km², 152 per hectare, the second-highest density in the city. About 23.5% of residents did not hold German citizenship, below the city average of 30.6%.
Character
- Haidhausen: the city portal describes it as a popular scene and entertainment quarter that is still a quiet residential area. Much of its historic building stock survived the Second World War; about two-thirds of its residential buildings date from before 1914. The Franzosenviertel around Pariser Platz, west of the Ostbahnhof, was built after 1870/71 with streets named after battle sites. Squares such as Weißenburger Platz and Wiener Platz are popular meeting points.
- Au: relaxed and in places almost village-like, with narrow streets and cobbled lanes, the Mariahilf church and small 19th-century workers' houses (Herbergshäuschen). A 16-metre slope separates the upper and lower Au.
- Culture: the Villa Stuck, the Maximilianeum (seat of the Bavarian state parliament), the contemporary art space Lothringer 13 and the Art Nouveau Müller'sches Volksbad of 1901, one of Munich's oldest indoor pools.
- Events: the Auer Dult fair on Mariahilfplatz three times a year (Mai-Dult, Jakobi-Dult and Kirchweih-Dult), and the strong-beer festival on the Nockherberg.

Housing
Haidhausen's older apartment buildings appeal to people who like Altbau; the Au mixes historic streets with residential blocks and is, according to the city portal, one of Munich's most popular residential areas.
For families
About 14% of residents were under 18 at the end of 2025 (city average 15.2%). The Maximiliansanlagen along the Isar slope offer shade, lawns, a playground, picnic spots and walking and running routes. The Auer Dult is described by the city portal as more relaxed than the Oktoberfest and suitable for families.
Evenings and nightlife
Lively nightlife
Haidhausen is known as a scene and entertainment quarter with cafés, pubs, restaurants and galleries, while remaining residential. The Au has a calmer, village-like feel.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- Very densely populated (152 residents per hectare); green space is mainly along the Isar.
- Until 27 November 2026, U4/U5 trains run with restrictions at Max-Weber-Platz while escalators are replaced; trams 19 and 21 are the alternative.
- The Auer Dult and Nockherberg events bring visitors to the Au several times a year.
