Wilhelmsburg
Hamburg's largest neighbourhood by area, on the Elbe island south of the centre. Young, multicultural and changing fast, with older housing, big new developments, the Inselpark and nature reserves, a short S-Bahn ride from the main station and comparatively low prices.

Overview
Wilhelmsburg is a neighbourhood (Stadtteil) in the district of Hamburg-Mitte. It lies on the Elbe island south of the city centre, which the city portal describes as Germany's largest river island. With 35.4 km² it is Hamburg's largest neighbourhood by area; on 31 December 2025, 53,767 people were registered here, according to the Statistikamt Nord's neighbourhood profiles.
The population is young and international: 19.6% of residents were under 18 (Hamburg: 16.5%), and 33.6% held a non-German citizenship (Hamburg: 21.2%). The city portal describes the neighbourhood as "young, multicultural and lively", with an island feel and an unpolished character shaped by the nearby port.
After the 1962 storm flood, Wilhelmsburg was long seen as an unattractive place to live. The city's "leap across the Elbe" (Sprung über die Elbe) strategy, the International Building Exhibition (IBA) and the International Garden Show in 2013 brought new investment, housing and the Inselpark, and the IBA Hamburg GmbH, acting as the city's project developer, continues to develop new residential quarters on the island.
Character
The island has three zones: the west, dominated by the port and industry; the centre, the main residential area; and the east, with wide green spaces and farmland.
- Reiherstieg quarter: Gründerzeit houses with stucco façades and the Stübenplatz, which hosts a market twice a week.
- Veringkanal: cultural spaces such as the Honigfabrik, a cultural centre with decades of youth and cultural work, and studios in former industrial buildings.
- New quarters: several large developments along the former Wilhelmsburger Reichsstraße, where at least 5,200 new homes are planned according to the city portal, including the Elbinselquartier and the Spreehafenviertel.
- Landmarks: the Energiebunker, a former flak bunker converted into a solar-powered heat plant with a rooftop café, and the Windmühle Johanna from 1875.

- Ferry: line 73 runs on weekdays between the Landungsbrücken and the Ernst-August-Schleuse in Wilhelmsburg, part of the hvv fare system.
- By bike: the Old Elbe Tunnel from the Landungsbrücken is a popular route for cyclists into Wilhelmsburg.
Housing
- Gründerzeit buildings in the Reiherstieg quarter, many renovated since 2007, including small, affordable flats let to students.
- Post-war blocks and larger estates in parts of the centre.
- New builds in the IBA quarters and the large developments now under way, including experimental buildings such as the timber Woodcube.
In January 2026, 19.6% of flats were subsidised social housing (Hamburg: 7.6%). Listed prices for owner-occupied flats were about €4,300 per m² (Hamburg average €6,278), among the lowest close to the centre. Residents had 30 m² of living space per person in 2025 (Hamburg: 38.8 m²).
For families
At the end of 2025, 21.3% of households included children (Hamburg: 17.5%). Wilhelmsburg had 26 day-care centres (Kitas, March 2026) and 7 primary schools (2025/26), according to the neighbourhood profiles. The city portal notes investment in Kitas, schools and sports facilities to attract and support young families.
The Inselpark, a legacy of the 2013 garden show, covers more than 100 hectares with lawns, playgrounds and sports areas. The Heuckenlock nature reserve in the south has tidal forest and freshwater mudflats, and sheep graze on many of the island's dykes and meadows.
Evenings and nightlife
Mixed evenings
Wilhelmsburg has a local bar and culture scene around the Reiherstieg quarter and the Veringkanal, and hosts festivals such as Dockville in summer. Most of the island is quiet residential or rural; for big nights out, St. Pauli and the Schanze are a short ride away.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- The island is changing quickly; large construction sites will shape some areas for years.
- The west of the island is dominated by port and industry; check noise and traffic for a specific address.
- Sharp contrasts between renovated older quarters, larger estates and brand-new developments; visit the specific street before deciding.
