District
Wandsbek
Hamburg's most populous district, running from urban Eilbek and Wandsbek through Bramfeld and the Alster valley to the village-like Walddörfer and Rahlstedt, the city's largest neighbourhood. Quiet, green residential areas popular with families, with the U1 as the main rail link.

Overview
Wandsbek is one of Hamburg's seven districts and by far its most populous: on 31 December 2025, 457,027 people were registered on about 148 km², according to the Statistikamt Nord's neighbourhood profiles. Rahlstedt alone had 95,688 residents, more than any other Hamburg neighbourhood.
The district has 18 neighbourhoods. The city portal groups them into five areas: the urban core (Eilbek, Marienthal, Wandsbek, Jenfeld, Tonndorf), the Alster valley (Wellingsbüttel, Sasel, Poppenbüttel, Hummelsbüttel), the Walddörfer "forest villages" (Lemsahl-Mellingstedt, Duvenstedt, Wohldorf-Ohlstedt, Bergstedt, Volksdorf), the Bramfeld area (Bramfeld, Farmsen-Berne, Steilshoop) and Rahlstedt.
Character
The city portal's subtitle for the district is "from urban to village-like, there is everything". The south is city; the further north you go, the more rural it becomes.
- Urban core: Eilbek, Marienthal, Wandsbek, Jenfeld and Tonndorf are the most city-like part of the district and the closest to the centre.
- Bramfeld, Farmsen-Berne and Steilshoop: large residential areas with apartment blocks as well as houses; Steilshoop is dominated by apartment buildings (only 3.7% of homes there were in one- or two-family houses in 2025).
- Alster valley: Wellingsbüttel, Sasel, Poppenbüttel and Hummelsbüttel are leafy suburbs with single-family houses along the upper Alster and its hiking path.
- Walddörfer: Volksdorf and its neighbours feel like villages, with farmland, forests and nature reserves such as the Duvenstedter Brook and the Wohldorfer Wald, Hamburg's oldest forest district.
- Rahlstedt: Hamburg's largest neighbourhood by population, in the east of the district, with a mix of houses (27.1% of homes in 2025) and apartment blocks.
Getting around
- U1
- U3
- S1
- U-Bahn: the U1 runs from the centre via Wandsbek Markt and Farmsen to Volksdorf, where it splits towards Ohlstedt and Großhansdorf. The U3 serves the area around Wandsbek-Gartenstadt.
- S-Bahn: the S1 serves the Alster valley up to Poppenbüttel. A new S-Bahn line, the S4, is planned through the east of the district towards Ahrensburg and Bad Oldesloe.
- Buses: large parts of Bramfeld, Steilshoop and Rahlstedt are reached by bus rather than rail.
Journeys from the northern and eastern edges to the centre take noticeably longer than from the inner districts; check the hvv journey planner for a specific address.
Housing
Houses play a much bigger role here than in the inner city: in 2025, 29.5% of all homes in the district were in one- or two-family houses (Hamburg: 18.9%), rising to 55.5% in Volksdorf. The average flat in the district measured 83.6 m² (Hamburg: 76 m²), and 7.0% of flats were subsidised social housing in January 2026 (Hamburg: 7.6%).
- Apartment buildings in Eilbek, Wandsbek and Marienthal.
- Post-war and 1970s estates in Bramfeld, Steilshoop, Jenfeld and parts of Rahlstedt.
- Terraced and detached houses throughout the Alster valley, the Walddörfer and Rahlstedt.
For families
At the end of 2025, 19.5% of households in Wandsbek included children (Hamburg: 17.5%), and 17.6% of residents were under 18. The district had 261 day-care centres (Kitas, March 2026) and 54 primary schools (2025/26), more than any other district, according to the neighbourhood profiles. The city portal highlights the quiet residential areas close to nature as particularly attractive for young families.
Green space is everywhere: the Alster hiking path, parks such as the Hennebergpark with its small replica castle (Burg Henneberg), the Teetzpark and Hohenbuchenpark, and nature reserves such as the Höltigbaum and the Duvenstedter Brook.
Evenings and nightlife
Quiet evenings
Wandsbek is mainly residential and quiet in the evening. Wandsbek Markt and the local centres have restaurants and cinemas; for nightlife, residents usually head into the city centre, St. Pauli or the Schanze.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- Distances are long; in the north and east, check your commute and bus frequencies before choosing a flat.
- Many areas rely on buses rather than rail.
- Neighbourhoods differ a lot, from dense estates to village-like suburbs, so judge by the street, not the district.
