District
Hamburg-Mitte
Hamburg's central district, stretching from the old town, St. Pauli and St. Georg across the port to the Elbe island of Wilhelmsburg and residential Hamm, Horn and Billstedt. It has the best transport links in the city and very different neighbourhoods within a few stops of each other.

Overview
Hamburg-Mitte is one of Hamburg's seven districts (Bezirke). It contains the historic centre around the town hall (Rathaus) and the Binnenalster, the port, and a ring of very different neighbourhoods (Stadtteile): Hamburg-Altstadt, Neustadt, HafenCity, St. Pauli, St. Georg, Hammerbrook, Borgfelde, Hamm, Horn, Billstedt, Billbrook, Rothenburgsort, Veddel, Wilhelmsburg, Kleiner Grasbrook and Steinwerder, Waltershof and Finkenwerder, plus the North Sea island of Neuwerk.
On 31 December 2025, 315,320 people were registered in the district (main residence, population register), according to the Statistikamt Nord's neighbourhood profiles. The district covers about 142 km², much of it port land, so the average density of 2,216 residents per km² hides very dense inner areas next to almost uninhabited docks.
The district is also the most international part of Hamburg: 31.1% of residents held a non-German citizenship at the end of 2025 (Hamburg: 21.2%).
Character
The city portal describes Hamburg-Mitte as the city's heart, home to many landmarks and to the port as an economic engine, but also as a district of strong contrasts.
Centre and old town
Hamburg-Altstadt and Neustadt hold the Rathaus, Jungfernstieg, Mönckebergstraße, the Speicherstadt warehouse district and the Michel church. Few people live here: the Altstadt had only about 2,600 registered residents at the end of 2025.
St. Pauli and St. Georg
St. Pauli is known for the Reeperbahn entertainment mile, the Landungsbrücken piers and FC St. Pauli, while St. Georg, next to the main station, combines the lively Lange Reihe with busy streets around the station. See the separate St. Pauli profile.
HafenCity and the port
HafenCity, Hamburg's youngest neighbourhood, is still being built on former port land next to the Speicherstadt. The working port, with container terminals in Waltershof and Steinwerder, takes up much of the district's area.
Residential east and the Elbe islands
Hamm, Horn and Billstedt are large residential areas with post-war housing and some older buildings. Wilhelmsburg and Veddel lie on the Elbe islands south of the centre; the city portal describes them as changing from port-shaped areas towards popular residential neighbourhoods. See the separate Wilhelmsburg profile.

All of Hamburg's rapid transit lines meet in this district:
- U-Bahn: the U1, U2, U3 and U4 all serve the centre and the main station (Hauptbahnhof). The U2 and U4 continue east to Hamm, Horn and Billstedt; the U4 also serves HafenCity.
- S-Bahn: the S1, S2, S3, S5 and S7 run through the Hauptbahnhof; the S3 and S5 cross the Elbe to Veddel and Wilhelmsburg.
- Ferries: HADAG harbour ferries leave from the Landungsbrücken and are part of the hvv fare system.
- Long-distance and regional trains stop at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof.
S-Bahn routings around Altona and Sternschanze have changed since 2025 because of a bridge closure, so check the hvv journey planner for current connections.
Housing
Housing varies sharply by neighbourhood:
- Older apartment buildings in St. Pauli, St. Georg, parts of Hamm and the Reiherstieg quarter of Wilhelmsburg.
- Post-war blocks and large estates in Hamm, Horn and Billstedt, which the city portal describes as classic residential areas with many residents.
- New builds in HafenCity and in the new quarters being developed in Wilhelmsburg.
The average flat in the district measured 65.6 m² in 2025 (Hamburg: 76 m²), and residents had 32.9 m² of living space per person (Hamburg: 38.8 m²). 12.4% of flats were subsidised social housing in January 2026, well above the Hamburg average of 7.6%. Many of these flats require a housing entitlement certificate; see the guide on finding a flat in Hamburg.
For families
At the end of 2025, 16.4% of households in the district included children (Hamburg: 17.5%), and 16.1% of residents were under 18. The district had 150 day-care centres (Kitas, March 2026) and 31 primary schools (school year 2025/26), according to the neighbourhood profiles.
Larger green spaces include Planten un Blomen next to the centre, Hammer Park, the Öjendorfer Park in Billstedt and the Inselpark in Wilhelmsburg. Families often look at Hamm, Horn, Wilhelmsburg and HafenCity, where the share of households with children is highest in the district.
Evenings and nightlife
Lively nightlife
St. Pauli's Reeperbahn and the surrounding streets are Hamburg's best-known nightlife area, and the centre has major concert halls such as the Elbphilharmonie, the Laeiszhalle and the Staatsoper. Residential Hamm, Horn and Billstedt are much quieter in the evening.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- The district mixes very different areas; check a specific street rather than judging by the district name.
- Around the main station and parts of St. Pauli and St. Georg, streets are busy late into the night.
- Areas close to the port and major roads can have noise from traffic, trains and port operations.
