District

Bergedorf

Hamburg's largest and greenest district by area, in the south-east, combining the small-town centre of Bergedorf with its castle, residential Lohbrügge and Neuallermöhe, and the farmland, greenhouses and dykes of the Vier- und Marschlande. Connected to the centre by S-Bahn.

Overview

Bergedorf is the south-easternmost of Hamburg's seven districts. It is the largest by area (about 155 km²) and the least populous: on 31 December 2025, 134,434 people were registered here, according to the Statistikamt Nord's neighbourhood profiles, giving the lowest density of any district (869 residents per km²; Hamburg: 2,623).

The district has 14 neighbourhoods. Bergedorf and Lohbrügge form its urban centre. The other twelve make up the Vier- und Marschlande, a low-lying landscape of farmland and market gardens between the Elbe branches: the four Vierlande villages (Altengamme, Curslack, Kirchwerder, Neuengamme) and the Marschlande (Allermöhe, Billwerder, Moorfleet, Neuallermöhe, Ochsenwerder, Reitbrook, Spadenland, Tatenberg).

Character

The city portal calls Bergedorf "the greenest district of Hamburg", shaped by agriculture, tradition and nature.

  • Bergedorf town centre: the most urban part, with a pedestrian zone of half-timbered houses close to the Bergedorf castle (Bergedorfer Schloss), which houses the museum for Bergedorf and the Vierlande. The old observatory (Sternwarte) and a historic mill are nearby.
  • Lohbrügge: a large residential neighbourhood next to the town centre with apartment blocks and houses (21.1% of homes in one- or two-family houses in 2025).
  • Neuallermöhe: a residential neighbourhood with a very high share of subsidised social housing (47.7% of homes in January 2026) and many families.
  • Vier- und Marschlande: villages, greenhouses and flower and vegetable farms along the dykes; Curslack is described as "Hamburg's flower garden". The Kirchwerder Wiesen are Hamburg's largest nature reserve, and the Boberger Niederung has Hamburg's only shifting sand dune.

The district also includes the Neuengamme concentration camp memorial (KZ-Gedenkstätte Neuengamme), on the site of a major Nazi concentration camp.

Getting around

  • S2
  • S7
  • S-Bahn: the S2 and S7 run between Bergedorf and the city centre; the S7 continues to Aumühle in Schleswig-Holstein.
  • Buses: the Vier- und Marschlande are served only by bus, with longer intervals than in the city.

If you will commute to the centre, check the S-Bahn travel time from your nearest station and the bus connection to it.

Housing

  • Apartment blocks and terraced houses in Bergedorf, Lohbrügge and Neuallermöhe.
  • Detached houses and farmhouses in the Vier- und Marschlande; in Kirchwerder 67.6% of homes were in one- or two-family houses in 2025.

Across the district, 31.7% of homes were in one- or two-family houses (Hamburg: 18.9%), and the average flat measured 83.4 m² (Hamburg: 76 m²). 12.5% of flats were subsidised social housing in January 2026 (Hamburg: 7.6%), mostly in Neuallermöhe. Listed prices for owner-occupied flats in January 2026 were about €4,200 per m² in Bergedorf and €4,000 in Lohbrügge (Hamburg average €6,278).

For families

Bergedorf has the highest share of households with children of all districts: 20.8% at the end of 2025 (Hamburg: 17.5%), and 27.5% in Neuallermöhe. The district had 69 day-care centres (Kitas, March 2026) and 18 primary schools (2025/26).

Families use the Boberger Niederung, the Dove-Elbe and Gose-Elbe waterways, the regatta course and lakes in Allermöhe, and the open countryside of the Vierlande. The Bergedorf observatory and the open-air museum Rieck Haus in Curslack are popular outings.

Evenings and nightlife

Quiet evenings

Bergedorf town centre has shops and restaurants, but the district is mainly quiet in the evening. For nightlife, residents usually take the S-Bahn into the city.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Living in the Vier- und Marschlande usually means relying on a car or infrequent buses.
  • The town centre feels like a small town of its own, with its own shops and services, but central Hamburg is a train ride away.
  • Parts of the Marschlande lie in low-lying areas behind dykes; check flood information for a specific address if this concerns you.
