District
18th arrondissement (Buttes-Montmartre)
Montmartre and the Sacré-Cœur, Abbesses, the Goutte-d'Or and La Chapelle: a dense, diverse and young northern district with hilltop village streets, busy markets and boulevards, major redevelopment in the north-east and mostly small flats.

Overview
The 18th arrondissement, officially Buttes-Montmartre, covers the hill of Montmartre and the districts to its north and east, up to the ring road. It covers about 6 km² and had 183,127 residents in the 2023 legal population (Insee), about 30,500 per km², among the densest in Paris. Its quartiers are Grandes-Carrières, Clignancourt, Goutte-d'Or and La Chapelle.
The population is young and diverse: 31% of residents were aged 25 to 39 in the 2023 census (Paris: 26%).
Local services such as civil status, identity documents, crèche requests and school enrolment are handled by the district town hall, the Mairie du 18e.
Character
- Montmartre: the Sacré-Cœur basilica, the Place du Tertre, small streets and stairways, a vineyard and the Abbesses area with cafés and shops. The boulevard de Clichy at the foot of the hill has theatres, cabarets and the Moulin Rouge.
- Grandes-Carrières: largely residential streets towards Guy Môquet and Lamarck–Caulaincourt, and the Montmartre cemetery.
- Goutte-d'Or and Barbès: a long-established district of migration with markets, fabric and food shops from many regions, including the area around Château Rouge and the boulevard de Barbès, and the fabric shops at the foot of the hill.
- La Chapelle: a district in transformation around the railway lines to Gare du Nord, with new housing, the Jardin d'Éole and the new Parc Chapelle-Charbon.

Housing
Homes are mainly small flats: 62% of main residences had one or two rooms (2023 census), one of the highest shares in Paris. 35% were in buildings completed before 1919 and 34% in buildings from 1946 to 1990.
Of the 124,500 dwellings counted, 8% were second homes or occasional-use flats and 11% vacant. Among main residences, 65% were rented, including 18% social housing (the Paris average) and 15% furnished. Owner-occupiers made up 32%.
Rent control applies. Check the reference rent with the City of Paris tool and OLAP's market-rent estimates by quartier for early 2026.
For families
Children under 15 made up 12.9% of residents in 2023 (Paris: 12.8%). Green spaces include the Square Louise-Michel on the slopes below the Sacré-Cœur, the Jardin d'Éole, the new Parc Chapelle-Charbon, the Square Léon-Serpollet and sections of the Petite Ceinture walkway.
Crèche requests and school enrolment go through the Mairie du 18e. Public schools are allocated by home address.
Evenings and nightlife
Lively nightlife
Pigalle, the boulevard de Clichy and Abbesses have many bars, music venues and late-opening restaurants. The Montmartre hilltop is busy with visitors in the evening. Grandes-Carrières and the northern streets are calmer.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- Montmartre is steep, with many stairways. If you have a pushchair or limited mobility, check the route from the métro to the door.
- The Sacré-Cœur, Place du Tertre and Abbesses are very busy with visitors, especially at weekends and in summer.
- Some streets around Barbès, Château Rouge and La Chapelle are very crowded and see visible street poverty. Visit at different times of day before you commit to a flat.
- Large redevelopment projects continue around La Chapelle and Porte de la Chapelle, so expect building works.
