District
17th arrondissement (Batignolles-Monceau)
A large north-western district of contrasts: Haussmannian Plaine Monceau and Ternes, the village-like Batignolles, the new Clichy-Batignolles eco-district with the Paris courthouse and Parc Martin-Luther-King, and the quieter Épinettes. Many families.

Overview
The 17th arrondissement, officially Batignolles-Monceau, runs from the Étoile and Parc Monceau to the ring road in the north-west. It covers about 5.7 km² and had 159,212 residents in the 2023 legal population (Insee), about 28,100 per km². Its quartiers are Ternes, Plaine-de-Monceaux, Batignolles and Épinettes.
It is a family district: 14% of residents were under 15 in the 2023 census, the second-highest share in Paris after the 19th.
Local services such as civil status, identity documents, crèche requests and school enrolment are handled by the district town hall, the Mairie du 17e.
Character
- Ternes and Plaine-de-Monceaux: stone apartment buildings, avenues radiating from the Étoile, the rue de Lévis and rue Poncelet market streets, and the Palais des Congrès at Porte Maillot.
- Batignolles: the former village around the Square des Batignolles, the church of Sainte-Marie and rue des Batignolles, with independent shops, cafés and a covered market.
- Clichy-Batignolles: a new district built on former railway land around the Parc Clichy-Batignolles – Martin-Luther-King, with recent housing, offices and the Tribunal de Paris, the Paris courthouse, at Porte de Clichy.
- Épinettes: a quieter residential area with smaller buildings, near the Square des Épinettes.

Housing
The housing stock ranges from 19th-century buildings to recent eco-district developments: 38% of main residences were in buildings completed before 1919 and 31% from 1946 to 1990 (2023 census), with new construction in Clichy-Batignolles. 25% of main residences had four or more rooms.
Of the 107,500 dwellings counted, 10% were second homes or occasional-use flats and 12% vacant. Among main residences, 61% were rented, including 16% social housing (Paris: 18%) and 15% furnished. Owner-occupiers made up 34%.
Rent control applies. Check the reference rent with the City of Paris tool and OLAP's market-rent estimates by quartier for early 2026.
For families
Parc Clichy-Batignolles – Martin-Luther-King, at about 10 ha, is the largest park in the arrondissement, with play areas and sports facilities. The Square des Batignolles, the Square Sainte-Odile, the Square des Épinettes and the planted Promenade Bernard-Lafay add further space, and Parc Monceau is just across the boundary in the 8th.
Crèche requests and school enrolment go through the Mairie du 17e. Public schools are allocated by home address.
Evenings and nightlife
Mixed evenings
Batignolles has bars and restaurants around rue des Batignolles and rue des Dames, and the Place de Clichy edge is busy at night. Ternes, Plaine-Monceau and Épinettes are mostly quiet in the evening.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- Line 14 and the RER E have greatly improved links from the north and west of the 17th since their extensions. Check which station is closest to the address.
- Line 13 is often very crowded at peak times. If you rely on it, consider alternatives such as line 14.
- The 17th is very varied: compare a Haussmannian flat in Plaine-Monceau, an older flat in Batignolles and a new-build in Clichy-Batignolles before choosing.
