District
10th arrondissement (Entrepôt)
Gare du Nord, Gare de l'Est and the Canal Saint-Martin: a dense, diverse and well-connected district with busy station areas, lively streets such as rue du Faubourg-Saint-Denis, and a young population.

Overview
The 10th arrondissement's official name, Entrepôt, is rarely used: people usually refer to its stations or to the Canal Saint-Martin. It lies north-east of the centre, between the Grands Boulevards, the Place de la République and the Gare du Nord. It covers about 2.9 km² and had 83,873 residents in the 2023 legal population (Insee), about 29,000 per km². Its quartiers are Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, Porte-Saint-Denis, Porte-Saint-Martin and Hôpital-Saint-Louis.
The population is young: 32% of residents were aged 25 to 39 in the 2023 census (Paris: 26%).
Local services such as civil status, identity documents, crèche requests and school enrolment are handled by the district town hall, the Mairie du 10e.
Character
- The stations: Gare du Nord, for international trains to London, Brussels and Amsterdam, northern France and the northern suburbs, and Gare de l'Est, for eastern France and Germany. The streets around them are busy at all hours.
- Canal Saint-Martin: the tree-lined canal with its locks and footbridges, cafés and shops along the quai de Valmy and quai de Jemmapes, the Jardin Villemin and the historic Hôpital Saint-Louis.
- Faubourg-Saint-Denis and Strasbourg–Saint-Denis: the Porte Saint-Denis and Porte Saint-Martin triumphal arches, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Denis with food shops and restaurants of many cuisines, covered passages and theatres along the boulevards.
- Saint-Vincent-de-Paul: quieter residential streets around the church of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul and the Square Montholon border.
The 10th is one of the city's most socially and culturally mixed districts.

Housing
The 10th mixes 19th-century buildings with later construction: 47% of main residences were in buildings completed before 1919 (2023 census) and 32% in buildings from 1946 to 1990. Flats are small: 57% had one or two rooms.
Of the 60,000 dwellings counted, 10% were second homes or occasional-use flats and 14% vacant. Among main residences, 58% were rented, including 16% furnished and 10% social housing (Paris: 18%). Owner-occupiers made up 37%.
Rent control applies. Check the reference rent for the address with the City of Paris tool and OLAP's market-rent estimates by quartier for early 2026.
For families
Children under 15 made up 12.8% of residents in 2023, the same as the Paris average. The Jardin Villemin – Mahsa-Jina-Amini beside the canal is the largest city-run garden, and the garden of the Hôpital Saint-Louis, the Square Alban-Satragne and the Jardin Marielle-Franco add smaller spaces. The canal banks are used for walks and play, and the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont is a short distance away in the 19th.
Crèche requests and school enrolment go through the Mairie du 10e. Public schools are allocated by home address.
Evenings and nightlife
Lively nightlife
Bars and restaurants line the Canal Saint-Martin, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Denis, the area around Strasbourg–Saint-Denis and the streets towards République. The canal banks fill up on summer evenings. Streets around Saint-Vincent-de-Paul are calmer.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- The areas around Gare du Nord, Gare de l'Est and La Chapelle are very busy at all hours, and some street corners see visible poverty. Visit the street at different times of day before you commit to a flat.
- The canal banks and the bar streets can be noisy on summer evenings and at weekends.
- Excellent rail links make the 10th practical for frequent travel to London, Brussels, the airports and northern and eastern France.
- Small flats dominate (57% of main residences have one or two rooms). Larger family flats are less common.
