District
9th arrondissement (Opéra)
From the Palais Garnier and the department stores of boulevard Haussmann up to the foot of Montmartre: a dense, lively district of 19th-century buildings, theatres, rue des Martyrs and the Nouvelle Athènes, popular with young adults.

Overview
The 9th arrondissement, officially Opéra, lies between the Grands Boulevards and the boulevards de Clichy and de Rochechouart at the foot of Montmartre. It covers about 2.2 km² and had 57,271 residents in the 2023 legal population (Insee), about 26,300 per km². Its quartiers are Saint-Georges, Chaussée-d'Antin, Faubourg-Montmartre and Rochechouart.
The population is young: in the 2023 census, 31% of residents were aged 25 to 39 (Paris: 26%).
Local services such as civil status, identity documents, crèche requests and school enrolment are handled by the district town hall, the Mairie du 9e.
Character
- Chaussée-d'Antin and Opéra: the Palais Garnier, the historic opera house, and the large department stores on boulevard Haussmann, surrounded by offices, banks and shops.
- Grands Boulevards and Faubourg-Montmartre: theatres, cinemas, the Hôtel Drouot auction house and covered passages, with dense residential streets behind them around rue du Faubourg-Montmartre and rue Cadet.
- Saint-Georges and the Nouvelle Athènes: a quieter residential area of 19th-century buildings, small squares and private lanes, home to the Musée de la Vie romantique.
- Rochechouart and rue des Martyrs: rue des Martyrs climbs towards Montmartre with food shops and cafés. The northern edge along the boulevards de Clichy and Rochechouart, around Pigalle, has many bars and music venues.

Housing
The 9th is almost entirely 19th-century apartment buildings: 68% of main residences were in buildings completed before 1919 (2023 census), and 52% had one or two rooms.
Of the 41,000 dwellings counted, 15% were second homes or occasional-use flats and 9% vacant. Owner-occupiers made up 40% of main residences, tenants 55% (including 16% furnished) and social housing 5% (Paris: 18%).
Rent control applies. Check the reference rent with the City of Paris tool and see OLAP's market-rent estimates by quartier for early 2026.
For families
Children under 15 made up 12.3% of residents in 2023 (Paris: 12.8%). Green space is scarce. The largest squares are the Square d'Anvers – Jean-Claude-Carrière at the foot of Montmartre, the Square Montholon and the Square d'Estienne-d'Orves in front of the Trinité church. Families often head to Parc Monceau in the 8th or the Square Louise-Michel in the 18th.
Crèche requests and school enrolment go through the Mairie du 9e. Public schools are allocated by home address.
Evenings and nightlife
Lively nightlife
The area around Pigalle and the southern side of the boulevards de Clichy and Rochechouart has many bars and music venues and stays busy late. Theatres and restaurants on the Grands Boulevards add evening crowds. The Saint-Georges quartier and the streets around the Trinité are calmer.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- Green space is very limited. If you have children, check the walk to the nearest square or park.
- Streets near Pigalle and the Grands Boulevards can be noisy at night. A flat facing a courtyard is usually quieter.
- The department-store area around boulevard Haussmann is extremely busy in December and during sales.
