On this page
All public transport in Paris and the wider Île-de-France region — metro, RER, Transilien trains, trams and buses run by several operators — is organised by the regional transport authority Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM). Fares are set for the whole region, so one pass works across operators. The core product is the Navigo pass, loaded onto a card or, increasingly, a smartphone.
Passes for regular travel
From 1 January 2026, IDFM fares rose by about 2.3 percent. The main all-zone passes cost:
- Navigo Mois (monthly): €90.80 (€88.80 in 2025).
- Navigo Semaine (weekly): €32.40.
- Navigo Annuel (annual): €998.80 for the year.
These passes are valid in all zones. The free personal Navigo card, for people who live or work in Île-de-France, carries your photo and can be replaced if lost or stolen. The anonymous Navigo Découverte card is sold at station counters to anyone; you write your name on its paper card and stick your photo on it, and it is not replaced if lost.
Getting your personal Navigo card
The personal Navigo card (passe Navigo) is for people who live or work in Île-de-France. It is free at first issue, carries your name and photo, and cannot be lent to someone else. You can get it:
- online on the Île-de-France Mobilités website, uploading a photo and choosing home delivery or collection at a station counter;
- at a counter in RATP or SNCF stations, with an identity document, proof of address and a photo taken on site, often issued immediately;
- by post, with a form available at counters. A lost or stolen personal card can be replaced at a counter for €15. Create an online Navigo account to manage your passes, invoices for your employer and declarations of loss.
Tickets for occasional travel
- Metro-train-RER ticket: €2.55 (2026).
- Bus-tram ticket: €2.05; a ticket bought on board costs €2.50, or €2.55 by SMS.
- Navigo Liberté +: a pay-as-you-go option for occasional travel, charged at €2.04 per metro-train-RER journey and €1.64 per bus-tram journey in 2026.
- Airport ticket to or from Charles de Gaulle or Orly: €14.
- Paris Visite for visitors: €30.60 for one day and €78 for five days (adult).
Paper tickets have been replaced: single tickets are loaded onto a Navigo Easy card (a non-personal card that can be lent to someone else) or bought by phone.
Students, seniors and reduced fares
- Imagine R is an annual pass for pupils, students and apprentices; in 2026 it costs €393.30 a year plus an application fee, and Imagine R Junior costs €17.20 a year. Students often find it much cheaper than twelve monthly passes.
- Navigo Senior costs €544.80 a year in 2026; check the age and other conditions.
- Solidarity fares (Tarification Solidarité Transport) give reduced or free travel to some people depending on their situation and income. They are loaded onto a personal Navigo card in your name with your photo; check eligibility on the IDFM solidarity website. Check the conditions on the IDFM website before buying.
Your employer pays half
Private-sector employers must reimburse 50 percent of your public transport pass for commuting, including for part-time staff and interns, based on second-class fares and the shortest route. Only subscriptions (annual, monthly or weekly) qualify, not single tickets. The refund is paid with your salary, at the latest by the end of the month after you buy the pass. Some employers pay more; IDFM indicates that 50 to 100 percent can be covered. Give your employer proof of purchase.
Practical tips
- Validate your card or ticket every time you enter a station or board a bus or tram; inspectors can fine you otherwise.
- For real-time journeys and disruptions, use the IDFM or RATP apps or website.
- To report a safety problem on public transport, call 3117 or text 31177; in an emergency call 17 or 112.
- For cycling options linked to your pass, such as Vélib' or the Véligo long-term e-bike rental (refunded by employers like a transport pass), see the cycling guide.
Watch out
Fares change every January; check the current price list on the IDFM website before you buy an annual or student pass.
Tips
If you arrive in the middle of a month, weekly passes can bridge the gap until you start a monthly pass. Order your personal Navigo card in your first week; a counter in a large station can often issue it on the spot. Compare twelve monthly passes with the annual pass if you will commute all year. Keep your purchase records in your Navigo account so you can claim the employer refund.
Frequently asked questions
Editorial answers written by our team, based on the sources below.
Do I need different tickets for different zones?
Navigo passes are valid in all zones. For single journeys, the metro-train-RER ticket covers metro, RER and train trips, while journeys to and from the airports need the airport ticket.
Can I use the Navigo pass outside Paris?
Yes. Navigo weekly, monthly and annual passes are valid in all zones of Île-de-France, including the suburbs. Check special services, such as some airport links, before you travel.
Can I use my phone instead of a card?
Many fares can be loaded onto a compatible smartphone, and IDFM has been extending this to more passes, including the annual pass on iPhone. Check device compatibility in the IDFM app.
