Sundays and holidays

Shopping hours, Sundays, markets and sales

Sunday is still largely a day off for shops in France, with exceptions that make Paris busier than most places. How opening rules work, where you can shop on a Sunday, how markets and sales seasons run, and how to plan your week.

What newcomers often notice

Newcomers commonly report that shopping follows a rhythm set by the week and the calendar:

  • Sunday rest is the principle. Under French rules, opening a shop with employees on a Sunday is in principle prohibited, with many exceptions. Food shops may open on Sunday mornings until 13:00, and shops meeting essential needs, such as pharmacies, tobacconists, newsagents and fuel stations, can open without time limits. Cafés, restaurants and hotels can open on Sundays too.
  • Paris has more exceptions. Shops in international tourist zones (zones touristiques internationales), of which Paris has many, including Haussmann, Le Marais and Montmartre, and in Paris's main railway stations can open all day on Sundays, although food retailers there still close at 13:00. Mayors can also authorise up to 12 Sunday openings a year.
  • Markets close on Mondays. Paris counts 91 markets, most of them food markets. Open-air markets usually run from 7:00 to 13:30 on weekdays and until 14:30 at weekends; all food markets are closed on Mondays.
  • Sales happen twice a year. Sales (soldes) take place on fixed national dates: in 2026, winter sales ran from 7 January to 3 February in most of France, and summer sales from 24 June, extended to 28 July because of a heatwave. Sale prices must be shown against a genuine reference price.

Context

Why Sundays are protected

Sunday is the traditional weekly day of rest in French labour law. The exceptions are designed around local needs (food, health, tourism) and around employees: in many cases Sunday work must be voluntary and comes with extra pay or compensatory rest.

Public holidays

France has 11 public holidays in 2026. Only 1 May is compulsorily a day off for all employees, with exceptions for activities that cannot stop, such as hospitals and public transport; whether other holidays are days off depends on collective agreements or the employer. Opening on public holidays therefore varies from shop to shop.

Everyday rhythm

Campus France's guide for international students notes that cafés open early for morning coffee and that national museums are often closed on Tuesdays. Independent shops such as bakeries set their own opening days and hours, so check the ones you use.

How it varies

  • Location. In tourist zones and stations, Sunday shopping is close to normal; in residential neighbourhoods, many shops close on Sunday afternoons.
  • Type of shop. Supermarkets, independent food shops, chains and department stores follow different rules and choices; check the hours of the places you use.
  • Season. Opening hours can change around public holidays and in the summer holiday period; check notices on the door of the shops you use.
  • Regions. Alsace-Moselle has its own, stricter rules on Sunday and public holiday opening.

Practical tips

  • Do your main food shopping before Sunday afternoon; most food shops close at 13:00 on Sundays.
  • If you need to shop on a Sunday afternoon in Paris, look to international tourist zones, department stores in those zones and the main railway stations.
  • Go to markets in the morning on Tuesday to Sunday; they are closed on Mondays.
  • Before a public holiday, check whether your supermarket, pharmacy or bakery will be open.
  • Pharmacies are allowed to open on Sundays, but not all do. For nights and public holidays, find out how to locate the on-duty pharmacy (pharmacie de garde) near you before you need it.
  • During sales, compare the crossed-out reference price; it must be a real price charged before the sales.
