Overview

Yonge-Eglinton is the central part of Midtown Toronto, around the intersection of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue. The City of Toronto's planning neighbourhood of the same name lies west of Yonge Street, between Eglinton Avenue and Briar Hill Avenue, and had about 25,000 residents. It is one of the four business centres outside downtown named in the City's Official Plan.

The area began as the farming village of Eglinton in the early 1800s. A horse-drawn streetcar reached it in 1884, it joined the town of North Toronto in 1890, and North Toronto was annexed to Toronto in 1912. The Yonge subway opened in 1954 with Eglinton as its northern terminus.

Character

  • Offices: the Canada Square office complex at Yonge and Eglinton, with the headquarters of organisations such as Canadian Tire, TVOntario and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.
  • Shopping and services line Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue.
  • The residential side streets around the intersection, and neighbouring areas such as Davisville, Lytton Park and Forest Hill, are quieter, with houses and low-rise apartments.
  • Apartment and condominium towers line parts of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue, and new towers are under construction.

Getting around

  • Line 1 Yonge-University (Eglinton, Davisville, Lawrence)
  • Line 5 Eglinton
  • Subway: Eglinton station on Line 1 Yonge-University is at the centre; Davisville and Lawrence stations are to the south and north.
  • Light rail: Line 5 Eglinton runs about 19 km east-west along Eglinton Avenue from Mount Dennis to Kennedy, with a transfer to Line 1 at Eglinton station. It opened on February 8, 2026 with an introductory service period; check the TTC for current hours and service levels.
  • Buses run along Eglinton Avenue, Yonge Street and the surrounding main roads.

Housing

Housing ranges from detached and semi-detached houses on the side streets to apartments and condominium towers on the main streets. Ontario's rent increase guideline (2.1% in 2026, 1.9% in 2027) does not apply to units first occupied after November 15, 2018, which includes many newer condominium rentals, so ask when a unit was first occupied.

There is no official rent figure for Yonge-Eglinton alone; Statistics Canada's experimental data put the average asking rent for a two-bedroom apartment across Toronto at $2,660 a month in the first quarter of 2026.

For families

Eglinton Park, a few blocks west of Eglinton station, has two baseball diamonds, soccer fields, a splash pool, a playground and tennis courts that become skating rinks in winter, and the North Toronto Memorial Community Centre with indoor and outdoor pools, a gym and an indoor rink. The Beltline Trail, a 9 km walking and cycling path on a former railway, crosses Yonge Street south of Davisville Avenue. Check your designated schools with the TDSB's Find your school tool.

Evenings and nightlife

Mixed evenings

Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue have many restaurants, bars and cafés; the surrounding residential streets are quiet.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Rents in newer condominium buildings are not capped by the provincial guideline; check when the unit was first occupied.
  • New towers are being built around the intersection; check for construction sites near an address.
  • Line 5 Eglinton started with an introductory service period in February 2026; check current service before relying on it for your commute.
