Overview

The Danforth, also known as Greektown, is the commercial and residential area along Danforth Avenue in east Toronto, roughly between Chester Avenue and Dewhurst Boulevard. The street is named after Asa Danforth Jr., an American contractor, and many of its buildings date from about 1910 onwards.

After the First World War, and especially in the 1950s and 1960s, many Greek immigrants settled here, along with Italian and other communities; by the 1970s and 1980s the area was described as one of the largest Greektowns in North America.

Character

  • Danforth Avenue is lined with Greek restaurants, bakeries and shops alongside newer cafés, bars and restaurants that arrived as the area gentrified.
  • Greek remains an important community language in the area: in the 2016 census Greek was the third most common mother tongue in the Toronto-Danforth ward.
  • The Taste of the Danforth street festival has drawn very large crowds in past years, but it was not held in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2024 or 2025; check whether it takes place in a given year.
  • South of Danforth, residential streets lead down to Withrow Park in Riverdale.

Getting around

  • Line 2 Bloor-Danforth (Broadview, Chester, Pape, Donlands)
  • 504 King streetcar (Broadview)
  • 505 Dundas streetcar (Broadview)
  • Subway: Line 2 Bloor-Danforth runs under Danforth Avenue, with Broadview, Chester, Pape and Donlands stations in and around the neighbourhood. For downtown, change to Line 1 at Bloor-Yonge.
  • Streetcars connect to Broadview station (504 King and 505 Dundas).
  • Ontario Line (planned): Pape will become an interchange with the Ontario Line, expected to open in the early 2030s; construction around Pape station affects the area until then.

Housing

The side streets have mostly older houses, some divided into apartments, and there are apartments above many of the shops on Danforth Avenue.

There is no official rent figure for the Danforth alone; Statistics Canada's experimental data put the average asking rent for a two-bedroom apartment across Toronto at $2,660 a month in the first quarter of 2026.

For families

Withrow Park (about 8.5 ha, between Logan and Carlaw avenues south of the Danforth) has an ice rink and open space. Check your designated schools with the TDSB's Find your school tool.

Evenings and nightlife

Mixed evenings

Danforth Avenue is busy in the evenings with restaurants, bars and cafés, especially in summer; the residential streets off the avenue are quiet.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Ontario Line construction around Pape station causes closures and noise until the line opens.
  • Basement apartments are common; check ceiling height, windows, heating and whether the unit is legal and safe.
  • Danforth Avenue can be crowded during summer events; homes right on the avenue are noisier.
