Locality
Scarborough City Centre
The civic and commercial heart of Scarborough around Scarborough Town Centre and the Civic Centre, with condominium towers, offices and a regional bus terminal; since Line 3 closed in 2023 it is linked to the subway by express buses on a new busway.

Overview
Scarborough City Centre is the central district of Scarborough, in the east of Toronto. It is roughly bounded by Kennedy Road to the west, Markham Road to the east, Ellesmere Road to the south and Highway 401 to the north.
Mostly farmland until the 1950s, the area grew after Highway 401 was built. The Scarborough Civic Centre and the Scarborough Town Centre mall opened in the 1970s and the Scarborough RT (later Line 3) in 1985. Scarborough became part of the amalgamated City of Toronto in 1998, and condominium and office growth followed in the early 2000s.
Character
- Scarborough Civic Centre and Albert Campbell Square form the civic core, next to the large Scarborough Town Centre shopping mall.
- Condominium towers surround the core, and Consilium Place is the main office cluster.
- South of the core, a band of wooded parkland runs between Borough Drive and Ellesmere Road.
- Beyond the centre, the surrounding areas are mainly industrial parks and low-density housing.
- Plans announced in 2018 for the area around the mall foresee many new residential buildings and parks over the coming years.
Getting around
- TTC buses to Kennedy station (Scarborough Busway)
- GO Transit buses (Scarborough Centre Bus Terminal)
- Line 3 Scarborough closed after a derailment on July 24, 2023, and the closure was made permanent.
- Buses to the subway: TTC express and local buses run between Scarborough Centre and Kennedy station on Line 2 Bloor-Danforth (where Line 5 Eglinton also ends). The TTC announced that the Scarborough Busway on the former Line 3 corridor between Kennedy and Ellesmere would open on September 30, 2026, with buses continuing on Ellesmere Road priority lanes to Scarborough Town Centre and a trip of about 15 minutes between Kennedy and Scarborough Centre. Check the TTC for current routes.
- Scarborough Centre Bus Terminal serves GO Transit buses and intercity coaches.
- Scarborough Subway Extension: Line 2 is being extended to Scarborough Centre (construction began in 2021); Metrolinx has not confirmed a firm opening date.
- Highway 401 runs along the northern edge.
Housing
Housing in the core is mainly condominium apartments in towers; the surrounding areas have houses and low-rise buildings. Ontario's rent increase guideline (2.1% in 2026, 1.9% in 2027) does not apply to units first occupied after November 15, 2018, which includes many newer condominium rentals.
There is no official rent figure for Scarborough City Centre alone; Statistics Canada's experimental data put the average asking rent for a two-bedroom apartment across Toronto at $2,660 a month in the first quarter of 2026.
For families
Albert Campbell Square is the central public square, and the wooded parkland to the south offers green space close to the core. Check your designated schools with the TDSB's Find your school tool.
Evenings and nightlife
Quiet evenings
Evening activity centres on the shopping mall and restaurants around Scarborough Town Centre; the area is otherwise residential and commercial, with little nightlife.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- Until the subway extension opens, getting downtown means a bus to Kennedy station and then Line 2; check travel times at your usual hours.
- Many rentals are in newer condominium towers exempt from the provincial rent increase guideline.
- Large construction projects around the mall and the subway extension will continue for years.
