Locality
Liberty Village
A former industrial district west of downtown, between King Street West and the Gardiner Expressway, transformed since the early 2000s into a dense area of condominium towers, converted factory lofts and offices, served by the 504 King streetcar and Exhibition GO station.

Overview
Liberty Village is bounded by King Street West to the north, Dufferin Street to the west, the Gardiner Expressway to the south and Strachan Avenue to the east, with rail lines along its north-east side.
The railways that cut through the area in the 1850s made it unattractive for housing, and it became home to institutions such as the Toronto Central Prison (1873) and later to large factories, including John Inglis and Company and Massey-Harris. The name comes from Liberty Street, which released prisoners walked along. After the factories closed, artists moved into the cheap space; redevelopment began in the early 2000s.
Character
- Old factory buildings now house lofts, offices and shops, including design, technology, media and marketing companies.
- Since the 2000s, many condominium towers have been built in the southern part. Density roughly tripled between the 2011 and 2016 censuses, when the population was counted at 7,836.
- Restaurants, gyms, cafés and galleries occupy converted spaces, and a volunteer residents' association has been active since 2011.
- Soil pollution from past industrial use, including wartime factories, persists in places.

- GO Transit: Exhibition GO station on the Lakeshore West line is at the southern end, with trains to Union station.
- Ontario Line (planned): its western terminus will be at Exhibition, and a King West station is planned at King and Bathurst; Metrolinx expects the line to open in the early 2030s.
- The King-Liberty pedestrian bridge (opened 2021) links the area to the King West neighbourhood across the rail lines.
Residents commonly report crowded streetcars and road congestion at peak times.
Housing
Housing is mostly condominium apartments in towers, plus lofts in converted industrial buildings. If you rent a condominium unit, your landlord is usually the individual owner, and building rules set by the condominium corporation also apply.
Units first occupied after November 15, 2018 are not covered by Ontario's rent increase guideline, so check the building's age before you sign. There is no official rent figure for Liberty Village alone; Statistics Canada's experimental data put the average asking rent for a two-bedroom apartment across Toronto at $2,660 a month in the first quarter of 2026.
For families
Most homes are condominium units, and limited green space and childcare have been concerns raised by residents. Exhibition Place and the lakefront are to the south, across the rail line and the Gardiner Expressway. Check your designated schools with the TDSB's Find your school tool.
Evenings and nightlife
Lively nightlife
Liberty Village has many restaurants, bars, cafés and gyms in its converted buildings, and King Street West to the north and east has more.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- Many rentals are in condominium units built after November 15, 2018, which are exempt from the provincial rent increase guideline.
- Streetcars and roads in and out of the area are often crowded at peak times; compare commute options before you choose.
- Events at Exhibition Place and BMO Field next door bring crowds and traffic on event days.
