Overview

Leslieville is part of the wider South Riverdale area, east of the Don River. It is bounded by the rail line and Gerrard Street to the north, McGee Street to the west, Eastern Avenue to the south and Coxwell Avenue to the east, with a population of about 25,700.

It began in the 1850s as a village around the Toronto Nurseries of George Leslie, after whom it is named. Many early residents were market gardeners or worked in brickyards, and later in light industry along Eastern Avenue.

Character

  • Queen Street East is the main street, with cafés, restaurants and independent shops that multiplied between 2000 and 2010.
  • Former factory buildings, for example along Carlaw Avenue, have been converted into condominiums and offices, and film studios occupy former industrial sites.
  • The streets north and south of Queen are mainly residential, with older houses.
  • Landmarks include Maple Cottage (1873) in Maple Leaf Forever Park, the Ashbridge Estate and, at the northern edge, the Gerrard India Bazaar on Gerrard Street East.

Getting around

  • 501 Queen streetcar
  • 503 Kingston Rd streetcar
  • 506 Carlton streetcar
  • Streetcars: the 501 Queen streetcar runs along Queen Street East to downtown, the 503 Kingston Rd streetcar also uses Queen Street East, and the 506 Carlton streetcar runs along Gerrard Street to Main Street station and downtown.
  • Subway: there is no subway station in Leslieville; the nearest Line 2 stations are on Danforth Avenue to the north.
  • Ontario Line (planned): an elevated Leslieville station over Queen Street East and a Gerrard station at Gerrard and Carlaw are planned, with opening expected in the early 2030s. Construction along the rail corridor affects some streets until then.

Housing

Housing is mostly older houses on the side streets, some divided into apartments, plus loft and condominium buildings in former factories and on the main streets.

There is no official rent figure for Leslieville alone; Statistics Canada's experimental data put the average asking rent for a two-bedroom apartment across Toronto at $2,660 a month in the first quarter of 2026.

For families

Leslieville has small parks such as Leslie Grove Park and Maple Leaf Forever Park. Check your designated schools with the TDSB's Find your school tool.

Evenings and nightlife

Mixed evenings

Queen Street East has a good number of restaurants, cafés and bars, busiest on weekends; most side streets are quiet residential streets.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Ontario Line construction along the rail corridor brings noise and closures near the future Leslieville and Gerrard stations until the early 2030s.
  • Without a subway station, your commute depends on streetcars; check travel times at your usual hours.
  • Parts of the area south of Queen Street were used by industry; if this matters to you, ask about the history of a specific site.
