The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) runs the city's subway, streetcars and buses. One fare covers your whole trip, including transfers between subway, streetcar and bus, for two hours. You pay by tapping a PRESTO card, PRESTO in a mobile wallet, or a contactless debit or credit card (or phone) on the readers at station gates and on board. GO Transit (regional trains and buses run by Metrolinx) and UP Express (the train between Union Station and Pearson Airport) use the same PRESTO system but have their own fares.

Fares in 2026

Single fares on the TTC (2026):

  • Adult: $3.30 with PRESTO or a debit or credit card; $3.35 cash.
  • Youth (13 to 19): $2.35 with PRESTO; $2.40 cash.
  • Seniors (65 and over): $2.25 with PRESTO; $2.30 cash.
  • Children 12 and under: free.
  • Fair Pass (low-income Toronto residents): $2.10 with PRESTO.

Discounted youth, senior and Fair Pass fares are only charged on a PRESTO card set to that fare type; paying with a bank card always charges the adult fare. PRESTO Tickets (paper tickets sold at stations) cost $3.35 for one ride, $6.70 for two rides and $13.50 for a day pass.

The two-hour transfer

When you tap with PRESTO, a PRESTO Ticket or a debit or credit card, your fare includes unlimited transfers on the TTC for two hours, in any direction, as long as you tap the same card or device each time you board or enter a station. Paper transfers from cash fares do not include this.

Monthly fare capping (since September 1, 2026)

Since September 1, 2026, the TTC caps what you pay each month: after 47 paid trips in a calendar month on the same PRESTO card, debit or credit card or mobile wallet, the rest of your TTC trips that month are free. A paid trip is the first tap that starts a two-hour transfer window. The count resets on the first day of each month. Capping applies to adult, youth, senior and Fair Pass fares; cash and PRESTO Tickets do not count.

Keep tapping on every trip even after you reach the cap, because the tap is your proof of payment. Use one card or device consistently, because trips are counted separately for each.

With capping, the TTC discontinued most monthly passes on August 31, 2026. The Adult 12-Month Pass and the Post-Secondary Monthly Pass ($128.15) are still sold.

Getting a PRESTO card and setting your fare type

A physical PRESTO card costs $4. You can buy one at PRESTO vending machines in TTC subway stations and at GO and UP Express stations, at customer service outlets, at selected Shoppers Drug Mart stores, or order it online (delivery takes 7 to 10 business days). You can also add PRESTO to a mobile wallet.

To get youth, senior or child fare types, take your card and proof of age in person to Shoppers Drug Mart or a participating customer service outlet; this cannot be done online or at a vending machine. Youth aged 16 to 19 must carry photo ID such as a high school ID, driver's licence or Ontario Photo Card. Post-secondary students need a TTC Post-Secondary Photo ID Card to use the Post-Secondary Monthly Pass. Register your card online so that the balance can be protected if it is lost.

Since March 2, 2026, your PRESTO card must have enough funds before you tap.

Fair Pass discount for low-income residents

The City of Toronto's Fair Pass Transit Discount Program saves 36% on single adult fares (PRESTO fare $2.10 in 2026). You can qualify if you live in Toronto, are 20 to 64 years old, meet the program's low-income definition and have a PRESTO card. Apply online at toronto.ca/transitdiscount.

One Fare - connecting to GO Transit and neighbouring cities

With One Fare, you can transfer between the TTC and GO Transit, Brampton Transit, Durham Region Transit, MiWay (Mississauga) and York Region Transit with one payment. It works when you pay with PRESTO or a debit or credit card, not with cash or PRESTO Tickets. On GO Transit and UP Express you must tap off at the end of your trip; otherwise you are charged a fare to the end of the line.

Watch out

Always tap: TTC fare inspectors check proof of payment, and you can be fined for travelling without a valid fare.

If you pay by tapping your phone, tap the same phone or watch every time; tapping the physical card linked to the same account counts as a different device.

Common mistakes

  • Paying with a bank card when you are entitled to a youth or senior discount, which only works on a PRESTO card with the right fare type.
  • Forgetting to tap off on GO Transit or UP Express.
  • Switching between several cards and phones, which delays reaching the monthly fare cap.

Tips

  • Use the TTC's trip planner or a map app to compare subway, streetcar and bus options.
  • Children 12 and under ride free and do not need a card.

Frequently asked questions

Editorial answers written by our team, based on the sources below.

Do I still need a monthly pass?

For most riders, no. Since September 1, 2026, monthly fare capping makes TTC trips free after 47 paid trips in a calendar month on the same card or device. Adults on a 12-Month Pass subscription and post-secondary students with the Post-Secondary Monthly Pass can keep using those passes.

Can I use my foreign bank card?

The TTC accepts contactless debit and credit cards and mobile wallets for adult fares. Your bank may charge foreign transaction fees, so a PRESTO card or a Canadian card is usually cheaper once you have one.
