District
Favoriten (10th district)
One of Vienna's two most populous districts, south of the centre, with the main railway station, the U1 line, a high share of municipal and cooperative housing, a diverse population and large green areas such as the Wienerberg and the Laaer Berg.
Overview
Favoriten lies south of the inner districts Wieden and Margareten. With 220,324 residents on 1 January 2024 (about 11% of Vienna's population) on 31.8 km², it is one of the two most populous districts, together with Donaustadt. It grew by 18.2% between 2014 and 2024. Wien Hauptbahnhof, Austria's main railway station, is in the district.
Its parts include the older area around Favoritenstraße and Reumannplatz, newer developments near the main station, and the southern areas of Inzersdorf, Rothneusiedl, Oberlaa and Unterlaa, which became part of the district in 1954.
Character
- Everyday life: Favoritenstraße was one of Vienna's first car-free streets, and the Viktor-Adler-Markt is the district's permanent food market.
- Population: 56% Austrian citizens, 15% EU citizens and 29% other nationals on 1 January 2024 (Vienna: 65/15/21). The largest foreign groups were from Serbia (5.7% of residents), Syria (4.8%), Turkey (4.6%), Romania (2.8%) and Bulgaria (2.6%). The average age was 40.
- Landmarks: the Spinnerin am Kreuz, a Gothic stone column from 1375 and a symbol of the district; FK Austria Wien plays its home games in the district.
Getting around
- U1
- Wien Hauptbahnhof (rail, S-Bahn)
- U1 runs through the district: Keplerplatz, Reumannplatz, Troststraße, Altes Landgut, Alaudagasse, Neulaa and Oberlaa.
- Wien Hauptbahnhof for long-distance, regional and S-Bahn trains.
- The planned U5 is to serve Favoriten with stations such as Gußriegelstraße and Wienerberg.
- Trams and buses add further connections; check the WienMobil app.
Housing
Favoriten has a high share of social housing. In the 2021 census, 30% of residents lived in municipal or public housing, 23% in cooperative flats, 29% in privately financed rentals and 13% in owner-occupied homes. Most buildings date from 1945 or later (about 10,160 of some 13,750).
Municipal and cooperative flats are allocated through the Wiener Wohn-Ticket, which usually requires two years of main residence in Vienna; newcomers mostly start in the private rental market. There is no official rent figure for the district.
For families
Favoriten has large green areas: green space and water make up 35% of its area, and the city counts 85 parks. Recreation areas include the Wienerberg, the Kurpark Laaer Berg, the spa centre at Oberlaa and the Böhmischer Prater. Register early for kindergarten places through the city's central registration.
Evenings and nightlife
Mixed evenings
Mainly residential; Favoritenstraße is the district's main shopping street, and the Böhmischer Prater on the Laaer Berg is a leisure destination.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- A large district with very different areas; compare the older streets near Reumannplatz with newer developments and the greener south.
- A high share of municipal and cooperative housing, which becomes accessible only with the Wiener Wohn-Ticket.
- Areas near the main station offer fast rail connections to the rest of Austria.
