District
Donaustadt (22nd district)
Vienna's largest and fastest-growing district, across the Danube, with the UN's Vienna International Centre, the Danube Island and the Old Danube, the Lobau, the new Seestadt Aspern quarter and a high share of cooperative and municipal housing on the U1 and U2.
Overview
Donaustadt is Vienna's easternmost and largest district, lying north and east of the Danube. It covers 102.0 km², about a quarter of the city's area, and had 220,794 residents on 1 January 2024, about 11% of Vienna's population. Between 2014 and 2024 its population grew by 31.1%, the highest growth of all districts. The density is 2,158 people per km², about half the city average.
It grew from former villages such as Aspern, Kagran, Kaisermühlen and Stadlau, and includes Donau City, a modern office and high-rise area, and the large new quarter around the Seestadt U2 station.
Character
- International: the Vienna International Centre, the UN campus, is in the district.
- Water and nature: the Danube Island (Donauinsel) and the Old Danube (Alte Donau) run along its south-western edge, and the Lobau, a large forest and meadow area, is part of the Danube-Auen National Park. Green space and water make up 53% of the area, and farmland another 22%.
- Shopping and leisure: the Donauzentrum shopping centre and the Donaupark with the Danube Tower (Donauturm).
- Population: 72% Austrian citizens, 11% EU citizens and 17% other nationals on 1 January 2024. The population is younger than Vienna's overall, with an average age of 40.
Getting around
- U1
- U2
- U1: Donauinsel, Kagran, Kagraner Platz and Rennbahnweg, among others, towards the city centre.
- U2: Donaustadtbrücke, Donauspital, Hardeggasse, Stadlau, Hausfeldstraße, Aspern Nord, Aspernstraße, Lina-Loos-Platz and Seestadt.
- Trams and buses link the residential areas; distances within the district are large, and car ownership is above average (41 cars per 100 residents; Vienna: 36).
Housing
Donaustadt has mostly newer housing: about 19,315 of its roughly 33,000 buildings were built between 1981 and 2021. In the 2021 census, 31% of residents lived in cooperative flats, 25% in municipal housing, 27% in owner-occupied homes and only 14% in privately financed rentals.
Cooperative and municipal flats are allocated through the Wiener Wohn-Ticket, which usually requires two years of main residence in Vienna, and some cooperative flats require an own-funds contribution. Private rentals are a smaller part of the market here. There is no official rent figure for the district.
For families
The city counts 104 parks in the district, and the Danube Island, the Old Danube and the Lobau are large recreation areas within the district. With strong population growth, register early for kindergarten and school places; see our family guide.
Evenings and nightlife
Quiet evenings
Mainly residential; leisure centres on the Danube Island, the Old Danube and the Donauzentrum area.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- A very large district: commuting times to the centre vary a lot between areas near the U1 and outer parts.
- Few private rentals (14% of residents); much of the housing is cooperative or municipal and needs the Wiener Wohn-Ticket.
- Many new developments, including the Seestadt Aspern area at the end of the U2.
