District
Alsergrund (9th district)
A compact, dense inner district north of the centre, shaped by the University of Vienna and the Vienna General Hospital (AKH). Mostly pre-1919 buildings and private rentals, with the U6, U4 and U2 on or near its streets.

Alsergrund lies just north of the Innere Stadt. It had 41,631 residents on 1 January 2024 on 3.0 km², a density of 14,030 people per km² (Vienna: 4,656), and grew by 2.7% between 2014 and 2024.
The district is closely linked to education and medicine: many departments of the University of Vienna and the Vienna General Hospital (Allgemeines Krankenhaus, AKH), the city's largest hospital, are located here.

For families
The city counts 26 parks in the district. Green space is limited compared with outer districts. Kindergarten places are allocated through the city's central registration; see our family guide.
Evenings and nightlife
Mixed evenings
A mix of residential streets and university life; cultural venues include the Volksoper.
Worth knowing before you move
Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.
- Close to the University of Vienna and the AKH, which can suit students and hospital staff.
- Older buildings dominate; ask about heating, lifts and the operating-cost statement.
