Vienna's public transport is run by Wiener Linien: five U-Bahn lines (U1, U2, U3, U4 and U6), plus trams and buses. Wiener Linien's Vienna tickets cover the city's core zone (Kernzone Wien).
On 1 January 2026 Wiener Linien changed its fares for the first time since 2012 and simplified the range. Wiener Linien and the City of Vienna have also decided to adjust fares every year from now on, so check the current prices before you buy.
Tickets and prices from 1 January 2026
Prices as published by Wiener Linien for the new fare structure (printed or at the counter / digital):
- Single trip, Vienna: €3.20 / €3.00. Reduced (children and young people): €1.60 / €1.50.
- 24 hours, Vienna: €10.20 / €9.70.
- 7 days, Vienna: €28.90 / €25.20.
- 31 days, Vienna: €75.00 / €65.20.
- Annual pass (Jahreskarte): €467 / €461 paid at once, or €506.40 / €500.40 by monthly direct debit.
- Reduced annual pass (Jahreskarte ermäßigt): €300 / €294 paid at once, or €315 / €309 by monthly debit.
The 48- and 72-hour tickets and the senior single ticket were discontinued on 1 January 2026. Digital single tickets and short-term passes are about 5% cheaper permanently; the €6 discount on the digital annual pass is time-limited.
Reduced annual passes
Three groups can buy the reduced annual pass at the same price:
- Seniors from 65 (Jahreskarte Senior).
- Young people under 26 (Jahreskarte Jugend), whether they study, train or work. From 1 February 2026 it replaces the semester ticket and the holiday monthly ticket for students.
- People with disabilities (Jahreskarte Spezial).
Pupils and apprentices can also use the Jugendticket or Top-Jugendticket for travel to school or training (the Top version also for leisure).
Buying and using tickets
You can buy tickets in the WienMobil app and the Wiener Linien online shop, which also show live departures and service information; the annual pass can be stored in the app. Printed tickets cost slightly more than digital ones. Ride only with a valid ticket: travelling without one is prohibited and fined (Mehrgebühr).
Night service
Since September 2010 the U-Bahn runs all night on Friday and Saturday nights and on nights before public holidays, at about 15-minute intervals. Check night connections for other days in the WienMobil app.
Bikes and shared mobility
WienMobil Rad is the city's bike-sharing scheme. According to Wiener Linien, it had about 3,000 bikes and 300 e-bikes at around 250 stations in all 23 districts in 2025. WienMobil Auto offers electric cars for occasional use.
Travelling beyond Vienna – the KlimaTicket
The KlimaTicket Ö covers scheduled public transport throughout Austria for a year: €1,400 (Classic) or €1,050 for young people up to 25, seniors from 65 and people with disabilities, for tickets starting from 1 January 2026. Wiener Linien also points to a regional KlimaTicket for the Eastern Region transport association (VOR).
Watch out
Fares are now adjusted annually; the prices above apply from 1 January 2026 and may change again in 2027.
Common mistakes
Buying a single ticket every day when a 31-day ticket or annual pass would be cheaper. Forgetting to switch an expiring student semester ticket to the new Jahreskarte Jugend if you are under 26.
Tips
If you will commute daily for a year, the annual pass works out at about €1.26 a day (Wiener Linien's calculation for the €461 digital price). Use the digital versions of single tickets and short-term passes to save about 5%.
