Austria has separate short numbers for the police, ambulance and fire brigade, as well as the Europe-wide 112. All emergency numbers can be called free of charge from any phone, and 112 also works in every EU country. Save the numbers below in your phone now.
Step by step
Step 1: Life-threatening emergencies
- 112 – Euro emergency number (all services)
- 144 – ambulance (Rettung)
- 133 – police (Polizei)
- 122 – fire brigade (Feuerwehr)
- 140 – mountain rescue (Bergrettung)
- 128 – gas leaks (Gasgebrechen)
Step 2: Medical help when it is not an emergency
- 1450 – health advice line: trained nurses assess your situation by phone 24 hours a day, tell you whether you can treat yourself or where to go, and can tell you which pharmacy is open. It does not replace a doctor. You pay only your provider's normal rate; from a foreign phone, dial +43 1 1450 if unsure.
- 141 – doctors' on-call service (Ärztenotdienst) when your doctor cannot be reached, usually 19:00 to 7:00, from Friday 19:00 to Monday 7:00 and all day on public holidays. If a sick child is under one year old, go to the nearest children's hospital outpatient clinic instead.
- 01 406 43 43 – poison information centre (Vergiftungsinformationszentrale).
Step 3: Crisis and support lines
- 142 – Telefonseelsorge, emotional support in a crisis.
- 147 – Rat auf Draht, help line for children and young people.
- 0800 222 555 – Women's helpline against violence (Frauenhelpline), free, anonymous and confidential, around the clock.
- 116 006 – advice service for victims of crime.
- 01 31330 – emergency number of the Psychosocial Services Vienna (Psychosoziale Dienste Wien, PSD). The PSD also runs a free "Sorgenhotline" on 01 4000 53000.
Step 4: If you are deaf or hard of hearing
- The free DEC112 app allows a text chat with emergency centres for police (112, 133), fire brigade (122), ambulance (144) and mountain rescue (140), and transmits your location. In acute danger, for example domestic violence, it can send a silent alarm to the police.
- 0800 133 133 – contact the police by fax or SMS.
Step 5: Breakdown services
- 120 – ÖAMTC breakdown service
- 123 – ARBÖ breakdown service
What to say when you call
Stay calm and say where you are (address, district, landmarks), what happened, how many people are affected and who is calling. Do not hang up until the operator ends the call. Operators may not speak your language; short English phrases and an exact address help.
Watch out
Call 144 or 112 in a life-threatening situation; 1450 and 141 are for non-life-threatening problems.
Tips
Write your home address on a note near the phone so that visitors can give it in an emergency. Save 1450 and 141 as contacts; both are short numbers that are easy to forget.
